View Full Version : The midnight poo.....what do you do?
My dd has a great new habit of pooing in the middle of the night!! Only once or twice has she cried out to let us know, every other time she falls back to sleep.
When I wake in the middle of the night I always go to check on my little one. If I smell a dirty nappy I always have a debate with myself as to whether I should change my daugher (which means that she WILL wake up) or leave the little cherub sleeping peacefully. I say change but dh thinks leave. What do you do??
Last night at 2am I changed her and to top it off she had leaked through her nappy and soaked the bed.So clothes and bed were changed. As I was finally tucking in the blanket I hear that dreaded noise  you know the one that means a dirty nappy!!! So out of bed we get to change another nappy.
Needless to say by the time I got back to bed I was very grumpy with dh he always manages to roll back over and go to sleep- he never hears a thing
My bub does the odd overnight poo and odd wet through. This makes me sound like a bit of a bad mum but unless he is starting to grizzle I don't get up. He has a habit of waking through the night and can often be heard playing with the cot bumper thingy but most of the time he goes back to sleep by himself. If he starts grizzling or grunting I'm needed for something.
So if he wakes and its around 4.30am, thats bottle time so I get up regardless, any earlier I leave him to see if he resettles. Most of the time I fall back to sleep and wake a few hours later. I figure if he is umcomfortable or hungry he won't resettle so my services are needed :p

I say change. I would not like to be left all night with a poo in my pants. Besides if you are using a good disposable it sucks all the moisture out making it very hard to clean later on.
I think also if you leave poo on the bum that long you would be looking for a good dose of nappy rash.
I am with Sopoli - if my girls have a poo overnight that I miss detecting they get shocking nappy rash. I have to change them, even if they are asleep. I have found that as they get older you can change the nappy without them waking properly - use a dim night light and not a bright overhead and it makes a difference. But I also have sympathy for the middle of the night nappy and bed change while DH snores on....and on.....
Change!
I put my child in the hallway with thier head in the dark and thier "nether regions" in the light and gently change them! Often they will stir, open thier eyes and grissle a bit, but they always settle again as I make everything as quiet and gentle as possible.
My best tip is to put the wipes in a warm place (hot water cupboard or zap them slightly in the microwave) before changes and then the shock of a cold wipe on thier bottom won't wake them up!
Both of my kids get horrendous nappyrash if they are left in a pooey nappy - no matter what they have been eating ... not to mention the horrible smell they are having to sleep with!

Change it of course! Agreed with others; how would you feel to have soiled nappy in your pants. Thomas had one or two of these esp. when he was teething so bad, he can’t help it the poor fella!
I hate it when someone said that “oh he’s 6 months now he should know the routines” gee whiz! What about the so-called accidents? I had once or twice "accidents" going to the loo doing number 2 at 2 am after strong curries/ food! The difference is that the poor bub didn't know how to get to the loo yet he he
Sorry off the topic here Dee Dee, but aye if the nappy's soiled, changes it ASAP!
Clean bum happy bubs, happy bubs sleep tight!
Thats my 2 c
