Hi I just thought id put up a post about a condition I just found out my 2 weeks old has and would like to see if anyone eles has the same with any of their children..After getting the heel test in hospital we found out that our daughter has a condition called Phenylketonuria..or PKU which means she cant break down protein, so she will never be able to eat meat, dairy, eggs nuts or fish..It was very hard to hear this news but now we more educated about it we are sure that we will be able to cope..Has any one eles heard of this condition and if so how has it affected your life?

I knew a lady a few years ago whose daughter has this. She said that the first few months were hard, but they eventually worked out what she could and couldn't have and that she could still have a wide variety of foods. Her DD knew by the age of 3 that she couldn't have certain foods too. I think she is about 7 now and is doing well.

Best of luck with everything. :hugs:

I have a 2nd cousin who has this and she knew very early on what she could and couldn't eat. The very nature of her condition helped her understand that being different wasn't just her parents being mean, but an important part of her lifestyle. There were always little treats that she could have that wouldn't affect her and she grew up incredibly healthy with no weight issues due to her extremely healthy lifestyle.

She is now a mother of 3 and although she was closely monitored during her pregnancies, she came therough them with little complication and continues to lead a happy, healthy and active lifestyle.

Make sure that you have close friends who are fully aware of what precautions you need to take and when your little one is older, send her to play with the kids there and ask your friend to feed them all the same kind of food making sure that she feels like "just one of the kids" when she is there.

OK, so life isn't going to be simple, but it is going to be happy and fulfilling as you will have a need to be close to your dd which will give you plenty of opportunity to have fun together and learn together!

I bet your little girl is beautiful! Big hugs and kisses from us for both you and your bub and congratulations on your precious miracle!
