Hey Ladies,

So a couple of weeks ago I took my son to Westmead Childrens for his development check up. He has a flat head which was my main concern, and today I got the referral letter for the helmet clinic.

Anyway, on the letter they listed his results for the Bayley 3 Development testing and it has me worried.... And he was being tested as a 4 month old (he is 4 months corrected):

Sub Scale Raw Score Risk Category
Cognitive 5 Emerging
Receptive Language 6 Competent
Expressive Language 4 Emerging
Fine Motor 6 Emerging
Gross Motor 7 Competent

I am not worried about the language results- They say in the letter he was not vocal- But he is just shy, when he is home he never shuts up.... But apart from that I just feel a bit down about his results. I thought he was going really good.... and I thought he did well. He was rolling, grabbing things, watching things, has anyone else ever had this testing done??? And what was your experience with it?

Also, he still struggles holding his head a little, it wobbles still a little bit and gets tired quick- It is def getting better but I see babies younger than him doing so well with his head I just cant help but worry. I keep thinking what if there is something wrong with him we just dont know what?

When he was born he was treated at westmead childrens and they said he has a vertebral anomalie- Which they were not worried about at all and said it was very minor, but now im worried about that thinking maybe it has something to do with his head wobble. Also I cant remember what the anomalie is exactly, so much happened in the hospital after he was born it was hard to take everything in.

He is extremely alert, and very smart he seems to know everything..... After Tia dieing I guess im just waiting for something bad to happen to him.

Anyway sorry about the rant :)

Hugs Cazzie - sounds like you have been through a lot! It's only natural to be worried - it goes with the territory of being a Mum.

I could be totally wrong because I'm no expert, but that report reads pretty possitively to me. He is either 'emerging' or 'competent' on every one!

I'm sure he will get there in his own time, and it sounds like you are receiving great care, so I'm sure they will pick up on anything if and when it develops.

Thanks for the reply :-) I know I'm being paranoid I try to tell myself that, but its soooo hard to get the thought that something bad is bound to happen out of my head.

I wouldn't be worried at all. My 3 had their 12 months assessment in august, it's was a big flop! To the point that DS & DD1 didn't do theirs.

Now their pead wants them to re do them but I'm sitting on the fence.

I wouldn't be worried at all. My DS just had his check and they recorded him as "delayed" just because he didn't tick their boxes while he was in with them. I see him changing and progressing every day and that's all that matters! Sounds like your little man is doing a-ok! :D

Just out of interest, how bad is your LO's flat head? My DS also has one and I saw a GP who's only answer was "I've seen worse" -helpful!! How bad does it have to be to need helmet therapy? (I know that's a hard questions to answer in words!!
Ta :)

Thanks ladies, that does make me feel better.
Naomi- imo- its pretty bad, when he was in hospital they were concerned about it and made him sleep on the special pillow, and back then I couldn't even see what they were on about! Well now u can't miss it. The whole back of his head is literally totally flat, which makes the back of his head very wide iykwim. I'm not sure how bad it has to get, I'm waiting to hear back from the clinic to tell me when his app is so I will be interested in what they say. The dr at westmead wasn't concerned about it and didn't seem to know much about it which was helpful lol, but I'm willing to try anything. I know its just cosmetic but if it can be fixed why not. I also think what if he wants to shave his head when he is older, or when he is really old and losses his hair and he has an odd shaped head all because I didn't try fix it when he was a bubs lol.... Ill let ya know what the clinic says.

Thanks Cazza , that'd be great if you could let me know what they say. DSs isn't as bad as your LOs by the sounds of it (not surprising considering the toke your bub spent in hospital). But yeah, he can't sit up yet so I'm pretty sure it's gunna get worse. I do tummy time 3-4 times a day and sit him on the bouncer and lots of cuddles on his tummy while lying on my chest etc. But his fave is lying under his gym ... so I don't know what else I can do!

Anyway. Thanks for your help an good luck at the clinic. Xx
