Hi All,
My first boy, Noah, still isn't social smiling. He does smile in his sleep now and then, but we have only managed to get hom smile maybe twice?
His brother however has been smiling since his was 3 wks old. Jonah also coo's but Noah doesn't yet.
Noah was also later than Jonah with his focusing and eye tracking.
Anyone else have babies who are late with smiling?
Thanks in advance,
Kelly
My DS smiled once at 9 weeks for me and once for my mum (which i didnt witness). He didnt start regularly social smiling until 10-11 weeks, which left me wondering if i had imagined the smile i witnessed at approx 9 weeks! They all do it at a different rate and the "they should be smiling by 6 weeks" thing isnt helpful at all. Im sure he's just fine and might just reach these early milestones a tad later than your other DS.
Dont you worry all is good

DD1 smiled at 3 weeks and DD2 at 4 weeks, DD3 didn't smile until she was 9 weeks and then only briefly, she was bout 12 weeks old before she smiled regularly. Also DD1 & 2 chatted and babbled away from a young age but DD3 rarely babbled, at 12 months she wasn't saying much at all. She was about 13 months old when she started babbling and making noises, at 2 she only had about 10 - 15 single words. Now at 2 yrs 4 months she puts 3 words together and chats away non-stop, she is very smiley and social.
They all do things at their own pace, DD3 was slower than her sisters but now she hardly ever shuts up!

Thanks girls. It's tricky having 2 babies the same age. It becomes very obvious when one is 'progressing' and the other isn't yet. I'll just keep smiling and playing with Noah. I think he might just be a serious kinda kid, takes it all in, but won't crack up at anything! Kinda like me, whereas Jonah is more like DH!

DS didn't smile til he was 12 weeks. He now is the happiest babe in the world and wears a big smile for most of the day :)
Just don't worry about it too much. He can sense that you're worried or stressed and will react on that by not smiling.
I also learned that trying too hard does the opposite as well. I always smiled and smiled and smiled till my face fell off, trying to get him to smile at me. Yet I'm pretty sure he knew that half of those smiles weren't genuine smiles. They were "trying too hard" smiles lol.

This was the same for both DS1 and DS2. My boys have more than made up for their lack of smiling in the early weeks. :)

If he was later focusing and tracking too, then perhaps his vision just hasn't developed as much yet? Not saying this to worry you, I'm sure everything is absolutely fine! Who knows, he may even be more social! My DD1 was social smiling VERY early, whereas DD2 not until 10ish weeks. Interestingly DD2 is a far 'smiley-er' child than DD1, even though she was later getting started.

You're probably spot on there. Some bubs are just more "serious" than others. Spend their time observing and taking it all in. Others will smile at the drop of a hat! Doesn't mean one is more advanced or even happier than the other. Just different little baby personalities. :)
Enjoy your scrummy boys x
