View Full Version : Are your IVF chances higher after natural births?
Hi all,
I am new this forum and was wondering if anyone knows or is in the same situation as me and could offer me some info.
I am a 33 male, my partner is 41. My partner has three children to her ex hubby. She had her tubes tied at 31 and 12 months ago she had a tubal ligation reversal, which didn't work. So we are currently doing our first cycle of IVF. So my question is do you have more chance of IVF being successful if you have conceived naturally before?
Cheers,
Shannon

no
many people end up with IVF with whats called unexplained infertility
nothing so called wrong with either one of us but it took 4 attempts of IUI and then one IVF before we got our BFP
hope you get a BFP first round also

One would think that your partner would have a great chance of conceiving thru ivf as she has conceived 3 children naturally & doesn't have fertility issues other than her tubes are not able to function anymore. IVF can be tricky even if the female partner does not have any fertility issues, it's all about a healthy embryo implanting succesfully. Good luck with everything.
Thanks. We find out tomorrow. We had 3 eggs, 1x 8 cell transferred on day 3.
Fingers crossed!

All other factors being equal (in other words accounting for age, other issues etc) than YES a woman who has succesfully concieved naturally before does have much higher chances with IVF.
However I would worry about your partners age - at 41 many women do have reduced fertility and yet many I know have sucessfully concieved (naturally I might add) very easily from their late 30s until their mid 40s so it' all depends (probably on genetics) in that regard. There are quite a few natropathic type things out there that can help with age factor problems if that does come up as a problem for you (low ovarian reserve for examaple) and knowing if you have LOR can be tested for with the AMH test (I'd highly recommend getting this done to know ahead of time as nothing is worse then doing an IVF cycle and only getting 1-2 eggs).
Good luck to you and your partner. Some people find IVF a difficult journey and hard on their bodies but then there are others like myself who find it quite easy (I have always done assisted conception cycles back to back and as often/fast as I can to get the result im looking for).
Hi EarthAngel75,
Our Dr (Luk Rombauts) from monash clayton told us after our tests that everything seemed to be fine except for one result which was low, but it was nothing to be too concerned about according to him, but we can't remember what it was and I am a bit hesitant to ring and ask and they don't seem to be very interested at monash. He did say the main thing was age. Even though we know everyboy is different and we know of 3 people who have had babies at 41-42 (including my mum) we are hopeful as my partner claims it never took her more than a month to get pregnant in the past (hence why she had her tubes tied lol).
Thanks for your advice on those tests, its something we will have to explore if we don't get a good result. I have been looking at acupuncture and that seems promising. I do have mixed thoughts about the whole number of eggs thing and I must admit sometimes confused. We had 3 eggs (which we thought was low amount and quizzed the nurse if the low amount could have been due to a polyp removal 2 weeks before, she said I wouldn’t think so) retrieved and we got 2 fertilised and 1 made it to day 3 at 8 cells, which after reading many forums, articles etc wasn’t a bad result and monash advising us that its quality not quantity. I have read many ladies results on here and other forums who receive a high number of eggs with low amounts of good quality eggs, so the jury is still out on that one for me.
Cheers,
Shannon

Actually I should have said the number of eggs you want (would like to see) will depend on what type of cycle you do. The standard down regulation cycle should produce the most amount of eggs (my fs likes to see at least 7 at collection but perferably more) where as say an antagonist cycle if a shorter stim and no down reg and produces much less eggs but usually of higher quality.
I have only ever done 2 down regs. 1st time we got 11 eggs, 2nd we got 8 and I'm actually whats classified as a poor responder lol but took a whole range of natropathic supps etc. Low number of eggs on a down reg is usually due to 2 things - either too much down reg (so ovaries are too turned off when stim starts) or not enough of the drug (I was on 300 gonal-f for example)
I know several people who have done accu for their cycles and been successful (with twins mind you lol!)
Good luck in the tww and 8 cells on day 2-3 is great :)
Good luck in the TWW. I know i am younger and again everyone is different, i can fall pregnant naturally but can't seem to carry them so i went through IVF with my kids. I fell pregnant off my first IVF cycle on a 8 cell 2 day transfer. :fingerscrossed:
I'm not sure on IVF but I know generally speaking you can only use your previous experiences to make an estimate of fertility if you have the same people involved - for example, the time you have to TTC before being considered for further investigation drops when you have had successful pregnancies with the same partner (from 12 months to 6 months). There's something in the compatibility of genes that basically suggests if you've done it before together you should be able to do it again - and problems may exist that weren't there previously if you can't.
Anyway - my point is that it might not matter that your partner has previous children because it's not a combination of your genes and hers, which could alter the outcome. Common sense would say that her uterus has shown the relative ease in hosting a foetus so that has to count in your favour now ;)
I am not a doctor though and it's probably a good question for your FS :) Well, it would be for me, I love genetics
Ok. I will have to ask the Doc about that. I know my partner was on 300 puregon nightly.
But this morning after 2ww they refused to do blood test because our nurse had not sent the paper work.. not happy :(
Shansta - how disappointing to have that thrown at you at such a nerve wracking time. Just to let you know my daughter was a day 3 7 cell embryo. I am 41. It did however take me 2.5 years and 12 cycles to get her. All my cycles were completely different, some cycles produced a lot of eggs, ie 11, some only 4 & it didn't matter what protocol I was on, but the end result was always the same, 2 embryos, not all were good quality ones and some where. For some it's a numbers game, but all that matters is you get your golden embryo, you only need one. Good luck, hope it's a success :fingerscrossed:
