I use terry flats (they were the only thing around 9yrs ago when I had my first) and I used to wash them in Napisan. Then I got a new washing machine and the instruction book said that Napisan is corrosive to the metal in the machine, so I stopped using it to make my machine last longer. I now use laundry powder, but I am wondering if there is something else that I could use. So what do you ladies use for your nappies??

I soak mine in a nappy bucket with bleach for an hour then wash them with Duo and Fabric softner

I just use washing powder. Any stains the sun seems to remove.

I can't use bleach because I dyed mine blue, lol. It would be nice if bleach was coloursafe, lol.

I dry pail then do a rinse only cycle every 3 days and wash with 1/3 of the recommended amount of Bio-zet with built in fabric softener. I dissolve it in the machine & wash in warm water (unless its really sunny then i use cold). Like Poshbecks, the sun bleaches the stains away
We flush any solids down the toilet, rinse the dirty nappies, just throw the wet ones into the bucket to drypail. Then we prerinse, and then wash on warm with 1/2 dose of Duo and line dry.
You shouldn't use fabric softener as it hinders the absorbency on your nappies and can also cause your fleece to repel. If you want the soft feel to your nappies, just chuck them in the dryer for about 10minutes.
We dry pail. Then every second day, I load the machine, put in a bit less than the recommended amount of OMOmatic, set the prewash and soak options on 40C and go to bed.
Every couple of washes I do an extra rinse but that's only because we have very hard water atm and I've upped the detergent. Otherwise when we're on rain water, it's only about 1/3 of the recommended amount and no extra rinses.
Most of the detergents these days have so many 'extras' that there's no need for bleaches or napisan. They just cost more and will wear out your nappies faster. We have never had a stain using our machine (even that horrible newborn poop) and actually my unbleached Tots Bots are now whiter than a friend's white terry flats.

I Dry Pail in a bucket, when that is full i put them in the machine on a warm wash with half the amount of DUO needed, then hang in sun.
Dry Pailing smells less than when i used to soak in the bucket and i hated the thought of napisan on DD bum:barf:

I dry pail then every second or third day first i do a cold rinse then i do a wash with a quarter of my normal washing liquid ( i use Earth Choice ). If its through winter cause i cant use my clothes line as we dont get sun out there then its in a hot wash otherwise a cold wash through summer & they are put straight onto the line for the sun to kill the germies !

I dry pail wet ones, use microfleece liners - so with dirty ones, hopefully the liner catches it all. Flush all solid stuff down the loo and rinse the liner off in cold water, add that to the rest of the dry pailed stuff. Pop everything in the washing machine on a hot wash with 2 tablespoons of "lectric" pure soap powder disolved in boiling water. Sometimes (every 10th wash or so) I add 1/2 a capful of canesten wash into the fabric softner container in the washing machine. Put the inserts into the dryer, and dry the nappies on the line in the sun, or in front of the fire if its raining.
Mind you, I've only been using cloth for a couple of days, so I don't know how well this works. But that's how I'm doing it for now!
Dry pail.
Warm machine wash overnight with 3/4 recommended (our water's quite hard, otherwise I'd use half) amount of Omo sensitive liquid.
Line dry in the morning, bring in in the afternoon.

i dry pail and then i wash in warm or cold water with 1/2 a scoop of the coles reliance washing powder. ($3 for 4kg) then i either put them in the dryer (if it is raining) or hang on the line in the sun.
i generally do the same with the pockets, aio's and stuffers too. (but i don't put them in the dryer)
I dry pail. This works as it doesn't smell as nappies soaking plus napisan and bleach isn't pleasant esp for babies (and Jeanette you know about my boy and his health) so we avoid that. Otherwise I wouldn't use cloth.
When i wash i use a small amount of sensitive liquid (due again to my boy and his skin) then leave on the line. The sun is a great natural bleacher!

I might just stick with washing them with laundry powder and hot water I guess.

Soak in nappysan baby care then wash in machine with Lux flakes(has no harsh chemicals)
In many water types, Lux or any other natural soap will coat the fibres and reduce the absorbency of the nappies; it may also make fleece liners and pocket nappies repel and wick.
A fragrance-free non-enzyme detergent, in small quantities (generally smaller than manufacturer's recommendations), is a much more common thread in cloth success stories.
Bleaches, antiseptics and "soaker" chemicals are expensive, can cause rash, and are just not needed. Hot water, a little detergent and/or sunlight is plenty for household sanitation purposes.

It's when you don't soak them in anything before washing. I don't use a nappy bucket, I just throw mine in the laundry tub, then every 3-4 days, I wash them and let them soak for a few hours before rinsing etc. HTH

hmm, thats what i thought....
but how doesnt it smell?!
The way i dry pail - after putting solids in the toilet (where they belong) place them in a nappy bucket with lid - no water, no soaking, no bleach, no napisan. Just wash them all together in the washing machine - I do that every 2 days atm.

Mine doesn't. I think soaking smells more. I think you can actually buy smelly (nice!) things to put in the bin...

I find that they only get smelly on about day 4 and only in summer. Like Kym, I find they smell more when sitting in water.
