Hi all,
Just wondering if I should worry about this or not.....my 7 week old has had tiny streaks of blood in 3 of his napies now, I rung a nurse and she said it could be an anal fissure, has anyone else had this happen to their babies??
Thanks

Is baby breast or bottle fed?

Breastfed babies tend to not get constipated as much as bottle fed ones, and constipation can contribute to an anal fissure.

I'd be inclined to see the doctor, especially if he is breastfed as there is less chance of constipation causing it.

He is b/f, and I've just noticed he is really straining, but the movement is loose and foamy.....gross I know! But other than that he seems fine. I will take him to a gp tho

The loose and foamy sounds more like bacterial gastro, which can cause bleeding, too.

I'd go to the GP, and it will not surprise me if you need to collect samples for analysis, either.

All seems ok, the doc said the blood is more likely some crystals that can form in the bowel and are nothing to worry about, but we're having an analysis done :)

Hi
Our DD2 also had blood in her nappy, we took her to the doc and it was an anal fissure. She was bf at that time so it can happen to bf babies too.

Cheers

I know this is an old e-mail posted in 2005 and all babies under discussion here are now, hopefully, happy 3 year olds but just in case someone new (like me) googles 'blood in stools' I thought I'd reply.

My baby is four months old and has stringy blood in stools (blood is bright red) for three weeks now. At first it was thought to be an anal fissure but after sending samples to lab in hospital (and lots of worry) it turns out she is lactose intolerent.

I am not a health professional but apparently the symptoms are diarrhoea, tummy ache and wind, and my baby has been verrry windy for quite a while so I'm sorry now I didn't get it checked sooner (before the blood appeared).

Apparently this intolerence can sometimes be temporary so second stool samples have been sent to lab but if they still come back with the same result my baby will be changed to soya or lactose free formula depending on whether she is just lactose or also allergic to cows milk protein.

Hope this helps someone

Best wishes
Susan

all my girls had it after birth it had something to do with estrogen levels it came from their vaginas.

but i have no idea if boys can have it for that reason
