I am going in for my 12 week scan on Monday at Canberra Imaging. I was wondering if anyone had anywhere better to go that may be cheaper since I was told I won't get much back, if any, from Medicare for the scan, and nothing for the NT blood work. They charge $279.00 for the scan and blood work there. I don't mind paying it, but if I could do it cheaper, I would.

Are you going through a hospital clinic at all?? I went through the ante-natal clinic at Calvary and all my scans were done free at the hospital.

I had my 12 week scan recently at Canberra Imaging at Calvary. The scan + NT cost me $277.80 ($111 for the NT test and $ 166.80 for the scan). The blood test cost an additional $120. So all up $397.80. You can claim everything from medicare except for the NT part of the test. I got a fair bit back cause we have already reached our safety net. It didn't take long to reach the safety net after a few scans as well as a bunch of GP visits .

 :detective: I'm going the the ante-natal clinic at Calvary and the only scan I will get done for free is the morph scan at 20 weeks.
i going through the ante natal clinic at the canberra hospital and all of my scans were done at canberra imaging - you do get some cash back from the ultrasounds, can't remember how much exactly though - less then half though as you can't claim part of it from medicare.
Also if you haven't already i'd try and get your blood tests done before your scan - when i was 12 weeks i didnt know about blood tests that needed to be done until the end of my ultra sound when the lady gave me the referral (you should also be able to get this from your doctor)...so i got my bloods done the same day as my U/S and i had to wait over 1 week for the blood results to come back, which the doctor needs to give you your ratio of DS and the other stuff they test for...this was really frustrating cos we wanted to wait till everything was fine before we told everyone..

I spose the first scan I had was an emergency (10 weeks and I was in a mass of pain so they were checking on bub). The next one was the morph and the 3rd was a follow up because they couldn't see some of the things they needed to the first time.

Thanks ladies. Yes, I'm going through the hospital, but because the 12 week scan isn't considered necessary, they won't cover it like they do the others. I am on 26, and don't have any other risk factors so I wonder if I can get the scan and then if everything looks normal there, not worry about the blood test? I am not concerned that the baby has DS, but since no one has so much as listened to a heart beat or done any sort of exam other than taking my blood & blood pressure...I just want to know it's okay in there!
not sure if you can opt out of the blood tests  ...yeh it's a long wait when your in the first trimester between finding out you are pregnant and seeing your bub, i didnt have a dating scan so it felt like ages! i think that the 12 week scan piccies are the best ultrasound pics that you get, mainly cos your bub is soo small that you get some great full body shots - whereas at the 20 week scan you get just the face or just the hands etc.

Thanks for your replies everyone.
Just incase anyone else has a similar question...
I went through Canberra Imaging even though I am going through Calvary Antenatal Clinic because the 12 week scan is the only one they won't do for free. I decided to get only the NT scan and not the blood work. The scan was $168.00 and I got back $60.00 from medicare. They told me I was very low risk, so the fact I chose to opt out of the blood work was fine with them.
:)
*bump*
I go the paperwork for calvery anti natal & have sent it all back.
I got a form for my 19-21 week scan, and I understand I need my GP to sign it, but should I ring and book it in now? I'm 9w4d and have booked in the 12w scan.
The lady who i spoke to on the phone sounded a bit scary/overworked and I can't remember if she said to book the later scan in straight away or not.
Doesn't matter, I now know I have to ring up for the scan at about 16 weeks, and I also got booked into Calvery - first appointment 31 January - when I'll be almost 21 weeks.
