Sorry this post is a little long winded.
We got the fright of our lives on Friday night when our DD who's 6 weeks stopped breathing. She was lying on the couch (parallel with the back) between my DH and his mum when DH picked her up to pass her to me and as he did so his mum saw that she'd stopped breathing. She was conscious, but was blue around the mouth and after he passed her to me and she sort of started breathing again it was a struggle, like she had something caught in her throat. We called an ambulance at this point and she was soon crying which the operator on the phone told us was a good sign. The breathing episode probably only lasted about 2 or 3 minutes but it felt like a lifetime.
The paramedics checked her over and deemed her to be fine. They told us that it's not uncommon for babies to stop breathing (breath holding) and possibly her head fell back too far when DH picked her up and it's blocked her airway. They didn't feel it was necessary to take her to hospital or even for her to see a doctor the next day.
As ironically she'd just had her 6 week follow up with a pedeatrician that day (where he'd given her a clean bill of health), I called on the Monday to see if this was just likely to be a one off occurence or if I should get her checked out. Unfortunatley he was out of the office, but his receptionist said he'd return calls later in the day. She rang me back that night and said he advised that I should keep her upright after feeds as it could be reflux (she vomits a lot). Only problem is the incident occured 4 hours after her last feed, just before her next?!?!?
I'm not sure what to do now, whether to keep following it up. DD seems happy enough, but I'm still anxious this could happen again. I've called my maternal health nurse for advice and am just waiting for her to call me back.
Has anyone else heard of something like this happening in young babies? (All I can find on the internet is breath holding in older babies and toddlers).
