View Full Version : How old was your baby/toddler/child when they first started swimming lessons?
Hello everyone
Well as the title of the post states, how old was your baby/toddler/child before they started swimming lessons?
If you started when the child was a baby, how did you find it? Did you have to get in the pool as well? How long did the lessons go for?
I would love to hear what everyone has to say
Take care

My ds was 6 months. It was great, he loved it. It was mainly about water familiarization rather than learning anything but he used to haveva ball splashing about and laughing and it was nice for me to catchbup with other mums.
DD1 started at 6 months, but she was too cold (it was a heated pool, but winter) so we started her again at 10 months and just did it through the summer months.
DD2 started at 12 months (when it was warm enough basically)
We have our own pool now so DS won't do it until he is old enough to start learning how to swim because all the things we can do at home quite easily.
Our swim school moves kids up based on abilities, rather than age, and they don't use floatation devices (arm floaties/bubbles) so a parent is required to get in with them until they reach the next level (for my older two it's been just before they were three).
DS started lessons with me at 12 months. It was far too cold before then.
I used to be a swimmer and was in a state team. I used to help out at my club teaching babies and toddlers so unfelt equipped to do it on my own. I find over winter we don't do it but come summer after 2 lessons he's back to where we left off.
I'm not sure how I'll do it this summer but I guess we'll fit it around DH work as having number two will mean we can't just go down to the pool and swim for an hour.
Can't help you out with swim schools except to say after 3 months with me DS had twice the confidence and twice the ability than all the children in the swim school i'd been watching. I guess it's the one on time plus I could take him as much as I liked and it was only $3.00 for the use of a pool sonsometimes we went 3 times a week :)
Both of my kids started at 6months old as it was the requirement by the swim school. They also offered a playgroup type of swim play from 3-6months. My swim school and the pools are heated, in the middle of winter i would be sitting in a tshirt.
I swim with DD her lessons go for 30mins and she loves it. DS is 2.5yrs old and has been moved up into a transition class he is in a pool where he can touch the bottom, DH goes in with him until DS gets the hang of the new lesson he also swims for 30mins.
I have a pool at home and it's more for the kids safety then anything else, plus i noticed i know every kid is different the earlier you start them the less likely they will be afraid of water on there face

April or May this year... and she turned 5 in July.
Obviously, we started a lot later than a lot of kids, but she's doing really well and has advanced from her age-bracket class into a higher level with slightly older children.
It makes me feel happy with the fact I didn't spend a fortune sending her when she was so little... because obviously, the kids that started when they were babies, aren't miles ahead than she is.
She was okay with water before that though, as I used to take her to the pool myself. She was okay with putting her head under and being in the pool without me when I started her in lessons. It would obviously be different if those things frightened her.

The girls started a few weeks ago, they're 3 and almost 6. Nathan starts in a few weeks so he's 1. I wish I had of got the girls in earlier, but didn't.
