View Full Version : Sick of shops selling things past their use-by-date
Is it just me or are shops becoming slacker about keeping track of the use-by-dates on their products! In less than 24 hours I have noticed that the bottle of Infacol that I bought recently from a chemist has a use-by-date of May 06 (about 4 months out of date) and I have just opened a bottle of (expensive) organic apple juice only to have it fizz up like it was cider (use-by-date of yesterday).
I can deal with the juice because I should have checked it myself, but when you go to a chemist and ask their advice you should be able to expect that you are getting a better level of service.

I agree, it is slack!!! I have quite often bought things from the supermarket (mainly cold stuff) only to find it out of date but the biggest thing that has P'd me off is that a number of times I have bought chicken from the supermarket only to find it out of date the next day & smelly already :barf:
Really we shouldnt have to worry about checking use by dates on everything, the stores should be on top of that especially cold stuff.
I hardly have time to check use by dates, I usually have two kids hanging off me & whinging for stuff & I just dont think to check.
Totally agree. I had some round pizza bases in my trolley the other day, got the checkout and noticed they had mould on them ewwww
I told the check out chick and you know what she said
'so do you still want to buy them?'
Ewwwwwwwwww :barf:

I have been stung a few times, but mainly with dairy/cold stuff, so now i always check the dates first. I'm pretty sure it is illegal for them to even sell stuff past it's use by date.

My sister bought 2 of those 6 packs of yoghurts from Coles yesterday, and the use by date was August 10th... how bad is that :shame:

I brought DS some Yoghurts a few weeks ago and they were out of date by a week!! Lucky I checked it before giving it too him. I dont buy any Yoghurt or Milk now before checking the expiry date!

its illeagle (sp?) i am pretty sure to sell goods for full price past the use by date but they can get away with it if the goods are discounted for quick sale:shame:
i dont think anyone should be aloud to sell anything passed its use by date.
i once brought chicken drumsticks for dinner and made a really nice dinner only to have it ruined by funny tasting chicken that was spose to be "fresh" from the supermarket deli:thumbsdown:

yep.. i know what ya mean!hmmm hard one.. my brother told me about this, (hes a health inspector!) and i cant remember what he said now! um.... i think its legal to sell things that are nearly out of date, (u know the items that have reduced for quick sale?) but not sure for things out of date.. i know where i used to live used to do it all the time! but it was mainly dry stuff, not cold stuff, so that was ok, i always checked though on the cold stuff just to make sure! yeah.. i agree some shops can be rather slack.. you can make a complaint though, we are allowed to you know! make it to the health department in your area and that should help! hope this helps in some way!!

:shame: It's actually illegal to sell anything past its useby date... When things are marked down, they should only be going out of date shortly- hence the 'for quick sale'.
I agree it totally sux. I used to work at kmart and we had the same problem... mostly it was because they would only hire 14year olds to fill the stock, and most of them couldn't be bothered to rotate the stock :banghead:
I too found chocolates and stuff during stocktake that was years out of date  also we had chocolates returned with maggots in them... :barf:
Eeeewwwwww...Its disgusting.

The latest meat trick is to put one piece of fresh meat on top and to put the seconds underneath...usually the fattiest pieces and often close to out of date. We now buy all our meat at our local wholesale butcher...much cheaper and beautiful tender meat and of course .... very fresh!!
Cold products...shops are allowed to sell products up to their use by date at a discount price but once its out of date:no: ..
I bought some cold ravioli in a pack once...got it home and it had mould all over it...so I went straight back and demanded another one...the only reason I took another is I was cooking for guests and was halfway through....I now only buy my pasta from a local italian shop...so fresh..better quality too and similiar prices.
I feel like we are going back to the old style of shopping at specialty stores for each household item...large department stores can't be trusted to provide us with quality products...
oh I wish I lived in the city!!
We only have one supermarket ~ Coles (overpriced @$$holes). No butchers (coles ran him out of town  ) only one fruit and vege shop which is more expensive than coles!!
:banghead: Now I'm all riled up again !!

I know how you feel Mum21, we ONLY have a Coles here. They are forever running out of the basics - Milk, Formula, Bread etc.
The fruit and veges are usually about to go off or are already off.
It pis*es me off SO much!! :banghead:

my local IGA (ex-supavalu) is still selling way out of date baby food, despite the fact that i have pointed it out weekly for 3 months. i don't buy a lot of the jars of baby food but occassionaly i'll get the heinz organic or whatever and i found that some of the stuff on the shelf was 6 months past it's use by date!! they had a row of soy cereal that was a year out of date!
i think it's disgusting, it's all food for 4+ months and i don't think a mum or dad with a young baby should have to worry about checking every little thing that! i keep saying i'm going to make a sign to stick to the shelf when i next go down there saying "do not buy these for your baby without checking date first" or something... but if people think it's illegal i might just make a few phone calls... is there a supermarket ombudsman or something?

It is totally illegal to sell anything (full price or otherwise) after its Use By date. However many products now come with a Best Before date instead and that is a whole other kettle of fish - its ok to sell them after that date.

I have a best before question...
I had left DD's food on the counter when heading over to my dads (thankfully he has plenty of bub food!!), went to pick up something for DD and it had best before 10/5/05... Surely that is WAY past even a use by date??
Think the shop is full of it, love to shut em down..

There is no exact legal time limit of selling food past a 'best before' date - it's open to interpretation. Though... if a store was found to be seriously endangering the public or something that was obviously no longer edible then you'd probably have a case.
What sort of food was it?

best before is the date the company recommends you eat it before but you can eat it after then but it wont be as good and may have lost its goodness.

Its one thing to run out of milk and bread (happens here too :banghead: ) But formula! That's really not cool.

I bought pre-packaged deli meat the other day- got it home and realised that it expired TWO WEEKS AGO. Disgusting.

oh yuck!!
on many occasions I've bought ham from the deli, 'fresh' off the bone. and a day later, its going slimy! :shame:
I cant believe how many people have stories like these!! The supermarket is good here, i think... i have never actually checked the use by and am now starting to get a little paranoid! But the corner shop where i live is terrible, i cant count how many things i have bought from there that were out of date. The only thing that wasnt out of date (ever) is the milk, but i think that is because the use by date is right there and stands out. I now wont buy anything unless i check the use by date.
It is just wrong that the big supermarkets are getting away with this, if it was a local store it probably would have been shut down by now! You should all complain to the health department!!!!
we recently brought some imported food from south america from a store in brisbane , it was flan, i made it and it tasted awful, i checked the date and it was 1 month out of date, both packets i brought were out of date, so we both went back to get a refund or exchange and all of his flan was out of date, and im takin about the whole shelf, he had to throw them all out. i got my refund. very well known shop in brisbane too!
You should all complain to the health department!!!!
you know i think you're right.
I totally agree. Just a couple days ago my dp got sick and i later discovered the juice he had drank earlier was out of date. SO NOT COOL!!
we are forverer finding things out of date.....
and completely off the topic so many supermarkets are ripping us off, we take a calculator to do our grocery shopping, so i take notice of prices and i often find when we get home that many products the ticket price was less than what we got charged. it was so bad at one place that i refuse to shop there anymore and i will be writting them a very angry letter and calling and having a go at the manager lol!!
i'd also like to add, that if staying in a hotel it is also wise to check dates on the mini bar items. i worked in a 5star hotel and was ALWAYS finding out of date things in the fridge... the worst was 1YEAR out of date!!!! so remember... check your beers people lol!!:barf:
