I have a family member who was diagnosed with a 'dermoid' on her ovary. 2.8cms and it needs to be surgically removed. Then she was told to go to the hospital and book an appt with a gyn... and left at that.
Anyway... I hadn't heard of them before ( and hubs having such a mind for detail telling me she had a derma on her ovary...) so I googled and I also searched forums.
What I found was what I think he meant... a Dermoid CYST. ( She told me on the phone tonight it was a dermoid - no cyst)
She was specifically told by this specialist that it wasn't a cyst, nor was it a benign tumour. I scratched my head when everything I turned up yesterday said it was both.....
She has been told nothing at all and I can only imagine she's totally confused. All she knows is there's something on her ovary that's not there and she's got to have surgery.
Anyway, I've read a couple of threads on here, and I was wondering if anyone can give me a quick rundown on what the whole deal is. I've read the components of the cyst are things like fat, hair and teeth, and that most people have a laparoscopy ( I hope I spelt that right).
I'd love to know as much as I can to help my family member from someone who has had and been through this.
TIA! :)
