My 6 week old girl just this week (last 3 days) has become really unsettled - she will be asleep and wake up with a high pitched cry this started this week, legs are kicking when she is awake and asleep - her little belly feels rock hard all the time, she groans and wriggles through her sleep - these have been since she was born. I give her infacol and she was good to get her wind up - not so good now. I am breastfeeding but last week started expressing to bottle feed. I bottle fed her a few times at the weekend with breastmilk and she slept like a log after it with no problems or symptoms - We are not doing anything different from last week to this week. I am afraid she is colicky or has reflux- she does not vomit but heaves a bit and tends to swallow it back down. And the symptoms are not just in the evening - they are all day. Its really hearbreaking and draining - i am due to travel to europe with her in 3 weeks and am terrified that this will be something else I will have to deal with on the flight (i am travelling alone with her - my partner cannot travel untill a few days later). Does anyone have a similar experience? im really hoping that this is just a 6 week old thing.

I also notice that she hasnt had a big dirty nappy in 24 hours - just a small nappy which is a little more solid than usual.

I really want someone to tell me that its a 6 week old thing - changes etc...arggggg

Thanks:(

if she is bringing up milk and swallowing it she may have gastro oeasophigal reflux where the muscle that closes at the top of the stomach is open a little allowing milk back up. she may need a baby antacid as prescribed by your pead. in the meantime try elevating her cot mattress 30degrees, keeping her elevated in some way all the time when awake inc when on the change mat(try poppoing a folded towel or 2 underr her), and prop her pram seat a little. this will help her to digest her milk before it comes up and burns her oeasophigas (spl?)
also if your willing dummies will provide her relief as she swallow with it.
but def go see a gp or pead. to get a proper diagnosis.

my dd had g.o.r and it really only reared its ugly head around the 6 wk mark. she benefited from an elevated cot, being kept upright for halfhour after a feed and some pretty strong reflux meds
hope this helps...:)goodluck

Thanks for that - as expected just back from GP and she was reluctant to diagnose anything .... she is putting it down to 6 week changes etc... I gave her "Infants Friend" lastnight and it seemed to ease the tummy cramps and bought up her wind straight away with very little spit.!

Fingers crossed its only a growth thing.

I am going to have a wild stab and say...its something you have eaten.

(cabbage, onion, fizzy drink, broccoli, capsicum and any other burpy type things can upset bubs tummy)

Maybe you have eaten something different and the expressed milk doesnt contain it

My DD is 2.5 yrs still breast fed and still reacts if i eat garlic or too much onion. I am ok with cabbage and capsicum now and also fizzy drink, like coke. But in the early days my diet was balnd and boring, and i slowly added to it to see if it made her react in any way.

Hey, Just thought I would try and help. My DD has Silent reflux... and your little 1 does have some symptoms of it... however they could also be due to something else, like maybe shes constipated. If her tummy is rock hard and her bowel movement hasnt happened or is only a little bit or if its pebble like then thats more like whats wrong. My DD was very constipated after we had to change her to thickened formula and she would scream when she was trying to poo. I just had to give her a little bit of water after or before every bottle! Have you figured out what the problem is as I realised you posted a few day ago?

Hi MummieofLexi, Thanks for your reply, Im still not sure what is up - the doctor was hesitant to diagnose silent reflux, however i have elevated her cot mattress a bit and that seems to have helped - she is not as unsettled now, I also give her infants friend to help with the bowel wind - so between the two she is a happier baby at the moment although the squirming hasnt stopped its a lot less! Its awful to see them in pain and not be able to help.

Thanks again.:goodvibes:
