would you buy a cat or dog from a pet shop?

No. I'd go to the RSPCA and adopt one from there

I voted other.

Usually i wouldn't. I dispise the whole puppy mill industry although i was tempted to a few weeks ago. I felt so sorry for the puppy that was left. He had been reduced in price so much because he was growing to big so he wasn't cute any more. He was a st bernard cross lab and was a big boy stuck in a small glass cage. I almost bought him to bring him home so he wouldn't be in there any more.

No because they are over priced and fund puppy mills! I like to see the mother (and possibly father) of the animal and where they were raised before buying.... Plus u never REALLY know what ur getting (friends have been stung before - thinking they are buying pure bred and getting a x bred)

Nope I would either go to RSPCA or Animal Welfare League.

Or if you are like my other half who had to have a pure bred puppy we went direct to a breeder.

never. there are too many unwanted cats and dogs at the pound. my family always had ound kitties or dogs. i've also adopted 2 pound kitties and also a stray whom i had desexed and vaxxed before re-homing.

so sad to see pound cats and dogs who have been given away :(

i an't even look in pet shops anymore. they make me sick.

21-09-2010, 19:32
Nope. We'd either go to a breeder or adopt a dog that needs a home. Both our dogs are adopted (but don't tell them, they think they are our first and second born children! :p)

i wouldnt ever buy from pet shop either. would most likely be from an animal refuge before we bought from anywhere else.

i was at our RSPCA a few weeks ago and by gosh, the dogs were so cute. my grandmother was so close to buying one right then and there. we are gonna go back in a few weeks and see what they have there then.

Nope, i'd either adopt from somewhere or buy privately. I don't like the way they are kept at pet shops,

I never have and never will buy from a pet shop.

I've always only had cats myself but I would tour to all the pounds i possibly could and scour the local papers and billboards to find my cats.

I grew up 'dog' house hold and it was the same deal back then too, no pet shops.

I'd rather save an animal.

No!

To the person who voted yes...go look at this...

http://www.oscarslaw.org/

We didn't get Poppy from a pet shop but I don't know where she came from. We got her from a lady who had the litter from 4 weeks of age! :(

When we get Poppy a fur brother or sister we will be going with a Rescue or RSPCA dog or going with a reputable AND registered breeder!

P.S - Bec ...Did you watch the 7pm Report tonight?! ;) How sad was it!!! So many Cavaliers!!! :(

I said no then read this and thought again, because I would have felt the same way and left with a large dog to bring home! That is so so so sad!

We have once.

It was from the pet store next to the shop I worked in.

The poor puppy had been there for ages and was the exact breed my parents were looking to buy for my brother. He was getting to big and they were going to take him to the pound:(

We paid $50 for him, and got a heap of toys and food ect.

Normally we buy from breeders or from the pound or in our case given from people who can no longer look after there dog.

Does anyone know what happens to the animals in the pet store who don't get sold?

lemonpancakes
21-09-2010, 20:07
CourtneyLouise I don't know, but I do think that many of the pups that DO get sold end up in shelters eventually when their owners realize they made an impulse purchase and can't handle the puppy anymore.

Pet shops not only support inhumane breeding practices, but they promote impulse buys. There's a reason shelters are overcrowded a few months after Christmas when unwanted gift dogs get surrendered.

When we get a dog next year it will only be from a responsible breeder or shelter.

And I will NEVER buy ANY pet care product from a store that sells live animals.

I have to add that it's not just pet shops who use puppy factories, but dodgy sellers online and in the trading post. So when buying a pup, do your research! Visit the breeder or shelter.

i would if they weren't ridiculously overpriced. i know they're chipped and stuff but the markups are ridiculous. we got tess free, unwanted backyard litter, but i reckon if we could have more easily afforded one from a pet shop i would have been sorely tempted.
i have bought birds from pet shops. and fish. and hermit crabs. i don't see the huge difference between them and cats or dogs. and i really don't want to be pelted with stuff about puppy mills and stuff cos that's not where they all come from. someone i know has sold puppies to a pet store a couple of times and they're certainly not a puppy mill- their dogs just happened to breed. i think that a lot of pet shop animals probably come from people like that.

I said yes because Bonny is from a pet store. Saying no would mean I regret purchasing her. She come from a reputable breeder (who we had the opertunity to meet because they happened to be in the store with mum when we bought her) and was fully vet checked. If we were to buy more we'd probably rescue or adopt though....but the way Bonny is tells me that won't be happening any time soon lol.

I did buy our dog from a pet shop. :(

We did go to the RSPCA and to our local pound but neither had any suitable dogs - and quite honestly, I didnt know (and didnt think) about puppy mills etc. I naively thought they were from breeders or treated well enough.

having read some of the threads here previously (and done some research myself) I would not buy from a pet shop again .... but my dog is gorgeous and wonderful anyway :D

CourtneyLouise I don't know, but I do think that many of the pups that DO get sold end up in shelters eventually when their owners realize they made an impulse purchase and can't handle the puppy anymore.

I actually really dislike these kind of generalisations. I bought my dog from a pet shop (he is now 8) and have loved him as part of our family. It was a well thought out decision ... not an impulse buy.

no. firstly, they are over priced and secondly, these animals never come from reputable, good breeders. good breeders will have a huge waiting list for their animals so the dodgy backyard breeders are supplying the pet shops.

No way. I would only get a puppy from a registered breeder or from a rescue place. Buying a puppy from a pet shot just supports the puppy mill industry & back yard breeders. Some say that they might buy a puppy from a pet shop because they feel sorry for the puppy, but by buying that puppy they are just contributing to the problem. There will be plenty more pups to replace that one you feel sorry for. I refuse to buy anything from a pet store that sells live animals.

I wouldnt personally ive done alot of volunteer work at shelters, worked in the local pound and am a dog fosterer as well. Some of the dogs are unable to be rehomed due to being so poorly treated but most are just crying out for attention. I really do beleive that dogs from shelters, pound etc really understand this is a second chance and they appreciate it so much.

I've only ever had cats that I've bought myself - both from Animal Welfare League. Unfortunately, I had to take one back as he was "mal-adjusted" but I did mention if he didn't get a good home I'd reluctantly pick him up again.

My kitty that I have now is the most beautiful, perfect pet anyone could ever have. She's just so easy to look after, sweet... and she's just a moggie. Love her to bits!!!

Reputable breeders DO NOT sell to petshops. Full stop!

I don't get how people can watch the video clips on Puppy Factory websites and still say "Oh, I'd buy from a pet shop".

Makes me soooo :(:gloomy::crying:

Like I said, Poppy was NOT from a reputable or registered breeder. I don't regret her but I would never buy a puppy like that again.

It's not a generalisation that many of the puppies sold in pet shops end up in the shelter as discarded animals. It's what happens. Just because some of them are well thought out does not mean that the statement that many end up in the shelters is incorrect.

21-09-2010, 21:03
So true MummaBear. And thousands of shelter dogs get killed every year because they fail the strict temperament tests the councils make the shelters enforce. Yet the government allows inhumane puppy factories to operate. It doesn't make sense!

Yeah, I was just thinking how sad it is that to stop puppy mills, to not buy from pet shops etc that the dogs who are from the puppy mills and pet shops will end up euthanized.

I totally agree about pet shops and stuff, though it is just sad all round, these poor suffering animals.

In my adult life, I have only ever owned 2 cats and a dog.

Both cats were bought from a registered breeder, the same breeder for both because she was so professional and brilliant with how she handled the animals she had in her care, and both of them were vaccinated, wormed and flea treated and came with pedigree papers. I had to also guarantee they would be fixed up as early as possible and show the breeder that they were fixed up. I loved them with all I had, but unfortunately was allergic to them. 6 years after the purchase of the first, and 5 years after the purchase of the second, I was no longer able to take the medication for that allergy due to pregnancy and breastfeeding and surprisingly enough my father offered to take them until I could have them back but then they "ran away" from his house  I don't believe that for one second because when they disappeared, so did all their papers, vet records, and show details.

My dog was a dumped, rejected little monkey and the furry love of my life :goodvibes: and right now he is asleep with one paw over my leg :bee:

No. I'd go to the RSPCA and adopt one from there

:iagree:

I am not big on animals but if/when my kids get older and want a pet i will look at getting one from the rspca. There have been times where we have looked at pet shops and been like 'aaawww' so we have gone hom,e and looked online for the rspca. I think there are too many unwanted pets out there that need homes rather than buying one from a pet shop. Also they are too expensive!!

We got our cat from AWL,she was a bragain at $50,came micro-chipped,wormed, etc.She spent 8 months there before we got her:(
She is the most gorgeous, affectionate thing you have ever seen, and we love her!!!

Do pet shops just sell you the animal-no questions asked??

Because at AWL,you have to go through an interview process to be approved.

I have bought a cat from the pet shop coz i felt sorry for her. I do not like pet shops coz they never desex their pets and they do not help the problems of stray animals breeding

My 2 other cats are rescues from a "no kill" shelter. RSPCA destroy animals like there is no tomorrow! I have worked there and used to hide kittens in the drawers so the vets wouldnt find them and put them to sleep.

I am glad I bought my kitten from the pet shop as I have now given her a great life. Because of PP she is a very timid cat and hates people. She also came into heat at 15 weeks of age only owning her for a week. If it was someone else they would have thrown her on the street, but after we got her des*xed.

But I rec to people that no one buys from pet shops..pet shops should be banned and not only that their policy should be before any animal is sold that they are castrated/speyed before going to a new home

We'll be getting our dogs from proper breeders.

I'd rescue a dog if DD was older and we weren't planning on getting 2 - 1 big and 1 small.

I'd never say NEVER ...

If I found the right pet for me in a pet store - then I'd buy it.

My current cat is a street cat. I lived in a country that had HEAPS of street cats but when I saw her - I just knew she was for me.

She now has her very own passport (has lived in 2 countries) and is the most spoilt street cat ever

Naw, pet stores that sell animals should be banned - and hopefully will be in the near future in Australia.
With the tens of thousands (more?) animals that are killed every year in this country I'm sure the right pet for everyone can be found at a shelter.
I don't support or buy from the RSPCA or local pounds as I prefer to support no-kill shelters and independent rescue organizations. There are so many of them, now easy to find with the internet.
Pet store animals are usually horribly socialized and have nil training anyway - plus cost a bomb, with no idea to their background. Big con, really.
Our three cats are rescues and our lab came from a decent breeder.

It's great that people are talking about this issue and people are learning about where a lot of pet store puppies come from. Another thing to know is that pet store puppies often have more health problems and die young or end up costing thousands in vet bills.

I am a supporter of no live animals in pet shops...so that should give you a clue!:D

My dogs are both from reputable registered breeders.

We kept an eye on the RSPCA, and even the local pound, but in our area, none of the dogs that end up there would have been suitable for us. (mostly pig-dogs) I even found an abandoned dog and considered keeping him when we couldn't find an owner, but he was not socialised with other pets and kept beating up my baby boy!

It is so hard, because you see the poor little tackers locked up in those glass boxes for weeks on end and you want to rescue them!

I know a girl who regularly rescues pet shop puppies, at great expense to herself, and none of them live very long :( (I mean, compared to the properly bred equivalent...she had a Cav that only lived 3 years)

we got our kelpie from a produce store, it wasnt a pet shop as such, but a big shed that sold hardware, feed, pet supplies and the farms all around would sell their dogs, chickens etc there, tucker was a beautiful dog, very frinedly aqnd a few months old when we got him and no, we didnt know anything about him or his history exept he was off a farm and he had 1st needles.

i would do that again it was helping out the neighbors and i probably couldve gotten a hold of the owner if i wanted.

but a pet shop in a shopping centre, dont think i could go there.

No I would nit buy a dog or cate from the pet shop. I have heard too many horrid stories on puppy farms etc.. Horrid conditions, so sad poor little things! We brought our dog from the lost dogs home. It took us a few trips to find the right dog for us but he was worth the wait. I like knowing that we gave him a second chance at life and he is now spoilt, lol!

Because of the thousands of animals euthanaised every year I think pets should only be sold by registered breeders. There is some poor kennels out there but it would be easier to control the numbers of unwanted animals if all pets were sterilized and breeders made to take responsibility for the animals they sell, for life.

:no:NO way no way no way not ever ever ever.

I think the pet industry has a lot to answer for. And it's not just the puppies and kittens I feel desperately sorry for...

I cannot understand birds in cages. A bird. In a cage. These beautiful creatures who have the ability and right to soar through the skies stuck in a cage (often overcrowded).

Everyone says "Oh, but they wouldn't survive in the wild". Well no, these birds bred for being pets in cages would not, So we need to cut this problem off at the source and STOP BREEDING BIRDS FOR PETS. It is a very out of date concept to me in this day and age.

What makes everyone think it's acceptable is that keeping birds is so common. It's the norm. But I think in the year 2010 it is about time we had a new 'norm'.

Consumers have the power to change the way these horrible people make money out of innocent, powerless animals.

If we don't buy, they don't supply.

Our family chooses to buy its pets from animal shelters.

But I can really relate to the person who said they nearly bought a puppy from the pet shop because they felt so sorry for it.

I was nearly tempted to do a similar thing last week.

nope, we adopt.
my old boy Taffy Cat was from a petshop- he hadn't sold, and the owner took him out the back alley and was about to hit him on the head, when 8 year old Trish rides past, sees and cries/begs/bribes to save his life. I had $2 pocket money, and he took it in exchange for Taffy.
and taffy went on to live a happy 17years, with a warm fire, doting kids and lots of love!

I actually do tend to agree. It makes me cringe seeing beautiful birds locked away - especially large natives, such as cockatoos, as pets in tiny cages. To never be able to stretch your wings. :(

I've always felt that way too, however my brother has always loved cockatiels and still wants one, is 21 and has wanted one since he was 10 and I thought of getting him a trained cockatiel. I know he would love it and care for it, it would not be in a cage really, it would be in his room, in the house, on his shoulder, etc but I still have issues with birds as pets...

we bought a kitten from the pet shop close to a year ago and we did. We felt sorry for her and she was so timid and scared of people.

If someone else bought her she would have been dumped on the streets b/c within a week of owning her she came into heat and god was it annoying. She was only 15 weeks old. She wouldnt come near us and would run away even though she was locked up in a bedroom for that time to transition

She is now des*xed and still doesnt trust but she adores me and is still warming up to DH. All 3 of our cats are strictly indoors

so in saying I voted other as I dont like the puppy mill side of things but those animals do eventually make their way into shelters

Pet shops selling pets should be banned as they dont desex the aniamsl and therefore contribute to the stray population.
