my darling 4.5 month old has terrible reflux (at least that what it has initially been diagnosed as).
She has been a biiig vomiter since birth and i knew what it was from about 10 days old a she was inhaling the breast milk and was always vomiting, snuffling and coughing. She was always sleepy for the first 6 weeks and in hospital she never ever ever woke for feeds and would always fall asleep while feeding- not much interest in food or sucking much. (no jaundice- just lazy and sleepy)
At 6 wks paed confirmed, it but like many other people, it wasn;t causing major dramas yet, so I was advised to keep an eye on it. Her weight gain was slow at that point.
At 8 weeks she started vomiting blood and went on losec (prescribed by GP). It helped initially, but then she started screaming and the feeding became really really really hard and she would refuse the breast and preferred to sleep.
So we started Zantac which kind of helped but she still refused to feed a lot of the time and so we were referred to a paed with very poor weight gains.
At 13 weeks we saw the paed who diagnosed reflux initially who did urine tests and strongly encouraged the need for DD to gain weight and said she had failure to thrive.
We went back to the paed last week and she had gained no weight at all in a month (she has only gained about 100g in nearly three months) and he organised a barium swallow (scheduled for thurs) and a referral to a paediatric gastroenterologist (we are seeing him in about 3 wks).
She has been regularly vomiting blood despite previously being quite a good sleeper over night (only waking a couple of times), she is now waking all through the night (last night was every single hour) but not wanting to feed but has been screaming the house down.
We can't co-sleep as she won't feed while laying down so i am getting so tired.
Paed gave us some tins of neocate and elecare as he was thinking she may have an allergy. We have been giving her a small amount of neocate (60-90ml- she won't take anymore) at night to see if that helps to fill her up or something. (We are trying to give everything a go).
Paed says she has to gain weight by next Mon 27th or she has have a NGT.
I have been dairy free for about a week- but no change noticed yet.
Is there anything else you can think of that I should consider? Allergies? Pyloric stenosis? Any other causes for such bad pain and vomiting blood?
Also, do you think the neocate may be causing an upset stomach at night and causing the terrible night times (she has been bad for the past 4 days and we have been trying her on neocate since last Wed.
thanks
