Sorry - a bit grosse!

I'm a bit confused, and really just want to see if anyone has any advice as I don't know what to do/or if I should do anything?!

DS is around 3 1/2 months old and has pretty much been a spewy bub since day 1. DD was the same (lucky me!).

He is FF and I've tried different standard formulas and also most recently the S26 AR formula on recommendation from my CHN. She said it probably won't help as DS is a 'great chucker' (noice!), but may help as it's thicker he may be able to keep it down. It sort of worked by making his vomit thicker, but he was still bringing it back up after every feed. I'll point out here that he's never in any pain, and putting on weight, so no problems here.

I've gone back to Heinz when this S26 ran out 2 days ago as I still had some left from last week as I'm not sure what to do.

Has anyone got a bub that is similar - if so what formula are they on? Is it worth checking with our GP if there's anything he can give us or check if he needs to run tests etc.

I'm so confused?! It doesn't seem to be affecting Ethan, but it's really painful for me as we go through probably 15 bibs a day and 3 or 4 changes of outfits (conservative as I don't always change him :o). Yet to mention I stink of it too!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanx :)

i hear u. ds is now just over 4mths and although he no longer projectiles every bottle he does still spew up. i mean he can hav a feed sleep for 3/4 hrs then get up and spew what i swear looks like half a bottles worth. i hav an appt with dr next week and am going to speak about this whilst there to see what he thinks. i too hav gone from formula to formula and like u hav ended up bak at hienz, i found it is cheap, he likes it and he doesnt throw it up anymore than he did any of the others. at my 6 wk check i told dr about ds spewing all the time and he suggested i try a food thickner which i couldnt find anywhere and as bubs spewing settled down i stopped looking.the other day though i found it at the chemist it is called karicare food thickner for adults and children, so as bubs still has some spew issues when i go to drs i will ask if he thinksit would bof any benifit me trying it now.
sooooo...i would make a visit to your dr and se what they think, if maybe u should try it or not.
good luck, hope the washing dies down soon. i know what its like, sometimes i wonder if maybe i should just buy ds more cloths (as sometimes i go through all his suits b end ofday) but then i will end up having more spewy suits.
enough rambling now...
bye, mary.

My DS was a spewy baby too and I had him an a bib until he was about 6 months. After every feed, I would burp him and a little would come up then more a few minutes later.

He was happy so I didn't get concerned. He was breastfed although I don't believe it's specific to the milk they drink - just to the bubba.

Hi there both my kids had reflux so I can understand what you are gong through. With DD I used the Karicare AR which seamed to help a bit but with DS he refused to drink any formula that was thickned. Both were on Zantac because they were in a lot of pain and very unsettled.
If your bub is happy and putting on weight I would just stick to the formula that he seams to like the best (and keep down). A lot of kids grow out of it when they sit up but it can take until they are walking (like my 2) until the vomits finally stop.
Hang in there i know the continues washing and changing of clothes is a real pain but it will eventually come to an end.

I think the main thing is he's putting on weight and not in any pain, he may just be a spewer! DD is the same age and she can puke up to 1 - 2 hours after a feed, plus now she's spewing saliva as well but it doesn't seem to worry her at all.

I know what you mean about the washing, its out of control! Maybe try using muslin squares to wipe everything? - more surface area so they last a bit longer!

Thanx for all your replies. :D

I ended up buying another tin of S26 AR last night as the Heinz seems so watery compared to the AR formulas and for the past 2 days he had also been feeding every 2.5 hours and been grizzly (our of character), like it wasn't filling him. For now, even though he is still puking I might stick to the S26 AR as it seems to fill him more. I can't complain he sleeps like an angel (straight thru the night).

I might just see how we go for now, and I'd love to hear how you go with the Dr next week, Mary. I too saw the Karicare thickener at the chemist, but it seems as though it would cost the same, if not more than just buying the S26.

It just seems I'm destined to have chucky bubs! :banghead:

Ds was similar.

When I started to ween him for booby we were using NAN Gold. The more we gave the more he chucked. On the advice from a parent at work ( I am a teacher) who works for Amcal chemist we changed to Karicare HA AR and bub is much better. Stills has a chuck every now and them but now where near as much as before.

She recommended Karicare HA AR as it was the supposed to be the Anti reflux formula on the market, S26 apparently tend to make bub constipated.

Hope this was helpful

Belinda

PS the only bad thing was the price it is $21 in the supermarkets, but you can pick it up at the discount chemist for $17 or $18

DS2 was a spewy bub too. It seemed no matter what we tried formula wise, nothing helped. We even had to have an ultrasound on him to test for Pyloric Stenosis. As it is heriditary (sp?) and mostly in males (both my uncle and cousin had it) the doc suggested to have him tested. It all came back clear and the doc just said he was a spewy bub. He did grow out of it once he started getting mobile. I would go through 15 bibs and "spew rags" a day.

Thanks, Belinda. Was Bailey in pain at all, or just the chucking?

For spewy babies, my pead said ditch the AR formula's and get the regular formular (suchas heinze) and get as a separate tin of what is called "karicare food thickener" it is in a little 300ml tin and is added after the formula is made up then shake it thru and it will thicken it up nicely. It is tasteless and odourless.. You can adjust the thickness with how much powder you put in.....

It can also be used for breasfed babies, just mix with water and give it to them either on a spoon or bottle..

It is about $10 a tin small chemists don't usually sell it, but the bigger ones and the discount ones do....

goodluck

Hi my son is just over 6 months now hes never been a real spewey baby i started off using S26 formular
at about 3 months he bagan spewing (heaps and heaps cants belive how much would come back out) after each bottle

my mother suggested changing formula so i changed to karicare gold which i find fantastic
i had no idea which one to choose there are so many im originally from NZ so my mum nagged at me to get karicare (made in NZ) or NAN
karicare also sells single travel packs that make up one bottle so i bought 5 and tryed it for the week saved me having to buy a whole tin and not use it
its worked great for us

every child is different and ive been told its all about the thickness S26 just wouldnt work for us and i love karicare were now going to try the karicare step 2 follow on formula so hopefully that goes well
goodluck:)

Hi Sherryn,

Thanks for your reply - do you use the normal Karicare or the HA AR or AR?

Good luck with the follow-on formula!
