I'm just wondering what the rules are in regards to riding pushbikes on roads/footpaths etc.

You can check you local state laws on the police website , in this state children up to the age of twelve are not allowed to ride on the road and are Allowed on footpaths that are not designated cycleways.

far as i know no bikes on footpaths (not sure if that's differentiated for age and i'd be willing to break that law for my kids, iykwim), must have a properly-fitted helmet, bell, at least one working break and front and back lights and reflectors if riding at night. bikes are allowed in transit lanes but not on highways.
