Hi Everyone!
My name is Courtney and I have been really blessed this year to start my degree in midwifery. I can already tell that this is going to be such a rewarding career, and I can't imagine doing anything else.
I am a first year student at the University of Queesland and I am based at the Mater Mothers for my prac. As part of our course we have to complete some 'follow-through' experiences, where we share the pregnancy and birth journey with the mother. This means that we attend some antenatal visits, the labour and birth and some postnatal visits.
It's a great opportunity to be able to meet someone who will care for you, support you and be there for you the whole way through your pregnancy and birth.
I would be really excited if anyone in the Brisbane area would allow me to be a part of this life changing experience. Although I am based at the Mater, we can go to any of the Brisbane hospitals including the RBWH, Mater Redlands, Sunnybank, the Wesley and more.
If you are interested I would love to hear from you...
Courtney :)

How far along in the pregnancy are you hoping your "subject" is? I doubt my husband would be too keen but it can give me something to think about?

Hi! Anywhere in the pregnancy is fine, as long as you have enough time left for 5 antenatal appointments. Usually 34 weeks or less is good, as there are a few appointments in the last month. Let me know if you are interested, have any other questions or your husband changes his mind... :). It's really good to have that extra familiar face and support person there.

Are the OBs at the Mater generally helpful in letting you sit in in their patients' appointments? From the information you've provided, I assume you work with ladies having their babies privately as well as those going through the public system.
What's the latest due date that would suit your purposes?

Hi! Yes we are allowed to do follow throughs with private patients too, although I haven't had any private follow throughs yet. Some of the uni girls have though, and they haven't had any trouble. I'm sure they would be used to the follow through concept, and they do work with students in the hospital quite often. The private obstetricians that I have met in the hospital are all very helpful and friendly to students. It's a great teaching hospital.
The very latest due date possilbe would probably be someone who is around 34 weeks. We have to fit in 5 antenatal visits, so it really depends on how often your care provider likes to see you leading up to the birth. Sometimes this is once a week in the last 4 weeks, so if this is the case and we could still fit in 5 visits then that would be ok.
Let me know if you're interested or know anyone else who might be :)

Congratulations on your pregnancy :)
It's really up to you on how much you are happy for us to do, and how much the midwife you are with is happy for us to do. We are allowed to work within our scope of practice for follow throughs, meaning we can do any of the skills we have done in class. Next year I will be in second year, and will have learnt a lot by May. I'm pretty sure we are actually delivering babies in first semester next year (how exciting!). Otherwise there are lots of other skills we can do too, like basic obs, etc. But it is totally understandable if you didn't want a student to perform these things, and it is still a great learning experience to observe the process from antenatal appointments through to postnatal care. In the birth suite we can act as a support person to both you and your partner, and can help advocate your wishes as well. Also, it's really good to have that extra person there that you know as well. It can make a big difference to have a familiar face.
Let me know if you're interested.

Hi Leigh, Congatulations! I am still looking for mums-to-be... probably will be looking until I'm finished my degree which is at least another year and a half :). So August is fine!
Let me know if you're interested - PM me if want or if you have any questions about the follow-through experience that I could answer for you...

Hi,
I am in the early stages of pregnancy and am looking for a support person to be involved in the whole process if possible. My husband is in the army and deployed OS in will only return weeks before my due date early Sep 2011. Am I too late in requesting your help? The Level of involvement would be flexible to suit where you are in your studies and requirements so long as you are able to work through the Wesley Private as Dr Ganter is my OB.
Love to hear if you’re interested in helping me though this! Or even if it is not for you maybe you know of another student that would like the experience.
Please get back to me

Hi,
Thanks for your response for my request for a support person, I really didn’t know what to do being in the situation that I am: with the Hubster away it really does not give him the opportunity to be there for me through this, he kind of just gets here for the event with no lead up to it.
I would love to have someone with me to help me right up to the birth; the fact that it might also help someone with their midwife studies is just a bonus.
I would love to meet up for a coffee and a chat; I am in Forest Lake is there somewhere midway (between you and I) that might work for a meeting?
I tried your ACU email but my emails just get rejected and send back, so maybe you could have better luck with contacting me; my email is- db902798@bigpond.net.au
Thanks again!
Kerry (AKA Uberkerence)
