Maybe she was talking about preservatives in food more than sugar.

I think *don't quote me though* that generally they suggest cutting out artificial flavours and colours, as well as preservatives.

also cutting out natural chemicals in foods such as salicylates and amines has proved to help behaviour...you would need to do an elimination diet to see what things they react to

google 'failsafe', you'll find a lot of help there. Maybe start with additives and preservatives as pp said, and see how you go.

I had to do the Feingold elimination diet with my oldest son and found he was behaviourally sensitive to many natural foods as Naomis mum has said. Not to mention most artificial colours/flavours/preservatives etc.
Watermellon could set him off for a couple of days, tomatoes and anything with tomatoes in it had him bouncing around the room. Any prepackaged foods that had flavour sachets, like noodles, chips, stock cubes. Any premade snack foods.
It ended up I would make all his treats, biscuits, cakes, pizza's (no sauce) etc. It really made a difference to his behaviour. I did find one thing odd, he couldn't eat all natural ice cream but he could eat soft serve, go figure.
My youngest son doesn't have any of the issues my oldest boy does, but he still reacts to certain foods. Those fruit snack bars (K-time twists etc) send him naughty, as does most lollies, all except The All Natural Confectionary Company sweets. Chocolate doesn't set him off, it didn't set off my oldest son either, only if it was flavoured.
It's no fun doing the elimination diet, but you'll be surprised at the result. I found the hardest part was waiting for trigger foods to get out of their system, sometimes could take up to 5 days. Oh and then when shopping having to check the numbers and ingredients on each and everything you buy for them. But it gets easier with time.
Good luck!
