View Full Version : How Do I Go About It?

My son is currently 6 months old. I had planned to get him circumcised before I was even sure I was having a boy. My husband agreed with me, he is circumcised and he thought it was the best choice for our son. The problem was we were so disorganised when my son was born that we never got around to it. We were living at my parents, my husband was travelling for work, we got married when my son was 10 days old. We moved when my son was about 10 weeks. We just had too much going on.

My question is, if I still wanted to get him circumcised how would it be done now, since he is a big squirmy boy now?

I have heard of a ring type thing being put around the excess skin on the penis? Has anyone else heard of this or used this method? Where abouts can I get it done in Melbourne??

Circumcision does not remove "excess skin", it removes complex tissue containing thousands of highly specialised fine touch receptors and nerve fibres.

Description of the technique from the Medical Journal of Australia, emphases added:
The prepuce is separated from the glans after a small preliminary dorsal slit has been made, and the Plastibell is inserted over the glans under the prepuce, which is then tied tightly round it at the base with a thread. The prepuce beyond the thread is then excised, and the Plastibell remaining in situ as a hemostatic agent

Complications include:

Three types of early complications were seen. The immediate one was bleeding at the time of the operation. This may be the result of the following occurrences.
1. The ligature not being tied tightly enough.
2. The initial dorsal slit (preputiotomy) being carried too far towards the corona, allowing the apex of the incision in the inner layer to retract behind the ligature. This results in a shaft hematoma.
3. Injury to the frenulum while separating the adherent foreskin.
It was found that the only way to control such bleeding was to remove the Plastibell and resort to the ligature and suture method.

I agree with the post above. You will find yourself in an argument witht the anti-circ crowd in here. They will demand that you explain yourself and try to talk you out of it.
Suggest you post in this thread - http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?t=43422&page=32

Back to the topic.

Most doctors would do it under a GA for boys older than 6 months.

Although, I think the clinic that I had my boy done in Melbourne does the plastibell (the ring you talk about) on all ages.
Here is a link for the clinic. Maybe give them a call.

I have had both my DS's circumcised. They were premmie so I couldnt get it done until at least 6 months old. I had a paediatric surgeon in Brisbane perform the surgery. During a consultation, he explained the number of times he has to perform the surgery to repair the plastbel (ring) type of circumcision. He mentioned how often the boys end up with a diagonal result becuase the ring has slipped a little. Nothing majorly wrong though, so please don't be put off about circumcision.

My boys were done two different ways for anaethetic because of their situation from premature birth. One was done under a spinal and the other under a general anaesthetic. They received a local injection into the groin area before leaving surgery so they had no pain for at least four hours later. Panadol for next 24 hours. Having it done surgically means the surgeon accuratly measures the amount to remove.

After care involves no bath for at least 24 hours. Also you need to apply vaselinein nappy for five days to reduce friction. Dissolvable stitches are used so both times I didn't even need a post surgery appointment at all. I was out of pocket $180 for anaesthetist and only paid a hospital co-payment for day surgery.

I don't like to tell people that they are circumised because I fear peoples response but the way the nurses and doctors dealt with my decision was great. They didn't show any reaction at all :)

If you have any extra questions you might like to ask about my boys procedures, feel free to ask

There is a place in Brisbane that uses the plastibell method up until 12 years of age and I think there is a place in Melbourne that is similar so you should still be able to use the plastibell method if you want.

The plastibel method for circumcision is a very popular practice these days. The common practice of circumcision for babies through to matured boys. It is pain free or very little pain, reduces viral transmission in adults, smegma which is terrible and reduces the incidence of infection, and some women could prefer the appearance of the penis with exposed glans.

There is a place in Sunnybank that used the Platebel method. I had my son done through this doctor. He even does as old as 9.
It is so simple and in invasive, you have to rub a little bit of numbing cream on the penis (this is so when the nappy comes off the baby does not feel the cool air and pee, making the site wet) the penis is then wrapped in a bit of glad wrap (to keep the cream on). YOu can't feed them for two hours to make sure they don't pee (this is the worst part). You go in, the baby has a plastebel placed around the foreskin and voila in 5 days it falls off. No pain nothing. The only way to go I think. My brother is disabled and 32, he is not circumcised and because he is the way he is he keeps getting infections etc because he does not clean properly. He cant' have this procedure done because of his age, he will have to go under a general.

I would like to remind everyone again, this is the Pro-Circumcision area

For those wanting to ask questions about the procedure, medical practitioners, after-effects etc. Any attempts by viewers to tell viewers why they shouldn't circumcise will be removed.

There is an Anti section and a Pro section for people to review, ask questions and a Discuss It section for discussing/debating it from both sides.

Please be mindful of what area you are posting before you reply and keep your responses appropriate for that section.
