My little man (just turned 1) has had a cold for a few weeks but last Wednesday things started to change. He was clingy and upset most of the time. By Friday night he had a fever of 39.1 and the fever went on the whole weekend. Monday I took him to the doctors and they could find nothing obviously wrong and assumed it was an upper respiratory tract infection. I took him to child care but had to pick him up a few hours later as he was extremely distressed. We've stayed home since but he started wheezing last night so I took him off to the doc's again this morning. The Dr was unsure if it was asthma or bronchiolitis so he is on ventolin, amoxycylin and PedMex (anti-inflammatory - probably got the name wrong). Today's the first day on the meds so I'm not expecting things to have dramatically improved. The worrying thing is that he is having these screaming fits. He throws himself backwards and writhes. He REALLY screams. I can often distract him for a while but he goes back to it. It seems to be worst in the afternoons and overnight. I don't know if this is the asthma/bronchiolitis, something else wrong, or just a tantrum. And I don't know what to do about it. Any advice would be VERY much appreciated!!
With thanks,
sleep deprived mum

While he had a high fever it isn't a huge concern if its is holding. The danger with a high fever is if it shoots up really fast. A child can have a seisure well below 40 degrees if it happens quick.
PredMix works wonders so just be patient. The thing with bronchitis is it usually worsens in the afternoon and gets really bad at night time.
With the wheezing - is the noise there when he breathes in or out?
Give the meds some time to work but if he gets worse or his breathing is a real concern don't hesitate to get him to a hospital. And if he doesn;t get better I suggest you go back to the Gp or even see another one.

Thanks Kamaikia:D . We had a slightly better night last night:sleeping: . Just a tantrum at 5am but I took him into the spare bed and he settled pretty quickly. He threw a few more tantrums this morning and I started some different techniques. The tv is OFF and I'm sitting with him and playing a lot. He also has a tendency to scream in delight and fun so I'm trying to address that. So far so good and he's gone down well for his morning nap. It's good to know that the bronchiolitis is worse in the afternoon and overnight as this would explain his behaviour worsening around those times.
Just in case these tantrums don't improve :banghead: does anyone know where I can get some advice/help?
Heaps of thanks,
Katrina
