View Full Version : Shooting or Stabbing Pain in One Breast
Hmm. my left breast hurts a little. Just every now and then there'll be a shooting pain on the inside, it lasts less than a second and will repeat itself for a while.
I thought it was because it was full and Cobey slept over his normal 3 hours, but he woke, he drained, and it's still doing it occasionally.
Anyone know what this is? is it normal? I'm seeing my CHN tomorrow who's also a lactation consultant.. should I bring it up with her?
Cheers girls! :D
definately bring it up with the nurse

Let us know what she says... I get that too. Left side, and everything. Thought it was just me
I have had this and be warned it could be the begnning of a blocked duct put a bag of peas on your boob don't use hot water this can make it worse, also another thing you can do it to just feed Cobey on your right boob for a while let the left one have a rest.
This is what my LHCN said but that was me you might have something else altogether!

I have experienced that too & even after my DD has emptied I still get it, I would describe the pain as exactly that, a sharp short jabbing pain, I have experienced it over a day a couple of times then the next day it is fine so I'd be interested to find out what causes it too.

Ive been told it *can* be thrush, or a blocked duct.
I'd love to know what your LC says tomorrow...I get this all the time, but dont seem to have either of the above!
Sometimes it takes my breath away! OUCH! :(

Hi,
Another thing it could be (as it could be thrush or blocked duct) is micro tears at or on the nipple. This is caused by lazy latch, or less than attentive postitioning.
You know how in the begining of the feeding relationship you are so particular about how the baby is positioned, then when you feel confident you let the whole show slide a little, not really tucking bub into your body, not worried if bubs head is turning away with the nipple in toe, letting bubs legs hang down ect.
Check with your LC when you see her she will point out anything that is obvious.
Yup I had this as well and mostly in my left breast  - I thought I was having a heart attack or that it was the sign of heart attack because of the shooting pain.
At the breastfeeding clinic I mentioned this to one of the LC there and she said it was just "let down" and it was normal.

Goosie - Could I get this from having my pump set to *high*?

yes, it could happen with a pump. Thats why the new Medula symphony has graduated suction, it changes throughout the pumping session. Also leaning into the pump while pumping so that the nipple is hanging into the pump (with the weight of the breast behind it), the pump isnt hanging off the nipple IFYKWIM.
I mentioned it to the CHN and she asked if there were sore nipples along with it, nope, so it shouldn't be thrush than, and neither were showing any thrush signs.
Then we got off track and forgot about it. LOL So no idea what it is, but I'll let you all know if/when my boobs explode.
