my bf has just decided he wants to get our son circumcised, but our son is currently 6 1/2 weeks old. he was born july 10. what age do they usually do it??
You will have to see if there is anyone who will do it. I know the guy who did both my sons would only do it up to 6 weeks.
Good luck fining someone.

Each to there own.
My 3 boys were done at 2 weeks old, if I went on a public waiting list you could have a 12 month wait! You need to get a referal from your GP for a peadiatric surgeon, that does circumcision. This will also give you an oppotunity(sp?) to speak with your Dr before hand.
This is your & your partners INFORMED decision, not for others to judge you.

I had my boys in a private hospital and they were all done at 4days old. My sisters middle boy wasn't done til he was 5weeks as he had really bad jaundas and they wouldn't do it til he was over it.
They can be done at any age but the sooner the better as the older they get the longer it takes to heal.
We had the plastibell done for our boys and they were done a bit older at around 3 months. If #3 is a boy he will be done straight away, then there's no worries about puppy fat getting in the way.
If you wait till their 12 months or older then they are done under a general.
And if you guys are wanting to get him done remember it's your choice don't let anyone make you feel bad for your choice, people need to respect it.

hey there, very personal decision that u both need to be committed too as I myself have copped some flack for getting my 2 boys done..We couldn't find anyone for our ds1 how wouldn't put them under/out..we eventually found one in Mt Gravatt QLD they use the plasterbelt I think its called and we had no problems really..ds1 was 11 months when we finally got organised and cause of the age they gave him a shot of pethadine to slow him down (don't think it worked). They didn'tput him out and they never cut anything..sorry if it TMI but all they do is pull the xtra over a plastic thing and put a band around it..Then u just have to wait until it falls off. We did have to give him panadol but thats it..ds2 was a little quicker but still about 3 months..The surgery might have a contact in ur area ??

I had my DS done at 5 weeks...they guy that did him has a cut off time of 6 weeks old. After that he wouldnt do them till after 2 if i remember correctly. Goodluck with your decision. :)
A midwife at the hospital let me know that if we wanted it done to ask my GP, they'll have a list of surgeons willing to do it and will send me for a referral. She said the normal cut off point (no pun intended) was 8 weeks. :) Good luck. :D

That's right seekrit - same information I was told until we realised it would have to be done - although my friend was told 6 weeks old by her dr.
I have done some cleaning up in this thread. Please keep to the OP's question.
Further to tickle's warning above: I understand that some of our members are very passionate about the circumcision decision. However, it is not appropriate to hijack another person's thread to argue the point. Please feel free to start your own thread to outline your experiences and / or research findings.
Cheers
Ds was 19 days old when he was done using the pastibell method
Hi,
I have had both my boys done, and bubs #3 is also a boy, so he will be done too. With DS1, he was done in the hopsital at about 6 days. With DS2, we had to wait until he was about 3-4 weeks old I think as the dr was away on holiday. They were both done using the plastibell.
As this seems to be one of the more positive circumcision threads, I am wondering, if anyone can tell me, can they, or do they, numb the area first when using the plastibell?

I think it can depend on the doctor but for me it was a must !
Our doctor used a local block basically like a local.

Yes they do. We had to visit the doctor before the procedure and were given the anisthetic cream to apply the morning of the procedure.
Thanks so much Allyoo and Sarie. I haven't been given anything for my others, so I was actually unsure of if they had been 'numbed' or not. I will ask when making the appoint this time if they have some!
