I have been prescribed Losec for my 6 week old with reflux. Has anyone had any experience with Mylanta? Does this need to be prescribed and can it be given with the Losec? Also, how do you manage to get all of those little granules from the Losec into bub's mouth???

Hi there
My son was diagnosed with severe oesophagul reflux via a barium swallow & x-ray and also medicated with Losec relatively young. As it's the king of reflux medication I don't understand why you would need Mylanta as well? Losec neutralises & blocks the acid that is causing your baby discomfort or pain when refluxing... Mylanta just suppresses it. Neither of them stop the reflux action.
The most common cause of acid reflux is an improperly functioning ring of muscle called the lower oesophagal sphincter (LES) where the stomach and esophagus join. The LES normally opens to allow swallowing, belching and vomiting and then closes immediately. If this sphincter stays relaxed, or relaxes periodically, the food and stomach acid can escape back into the oesophagus.
In relation to administering Losec ... we used to crush the tablet, mix with a little water, draw it up through a syringe and administer that way. He also used to take it from a spoon.
I'm interested to know if your GP prescribed the Losec or your paed?
Good luck ... a baby with reflux is no fun for baby and no fun for you. Send me a PM if you need support.

Hi Supermum the Losec seems to be working (fingers crossed) now and it's only been 3 days! My GP prescribed it. Although bub is still wanting to feed every couple of hours - hopefully this will change soon too!

Pleased to hear it ... reflux does really suck!
My son fed every two hours for the first eight weeks ... sometimes he would go 3-4 but only if he managed to drop off to sleep. I've spoken to a number of other mums of bubs with reflux and they are generally not good feeders ie. thrash at the breast or fuss with a bottle and with the breastfed bubs ... feeding alot.
Don't ever be afraid to ask for help if the answers you are getting are not helping. We found out via process of elimination - you know, kiss enough frogs you eventually get a prince?? Go to enough doctors eventually one will sit up and take notice.
Best of luck

Hi, Logan has been on Losec since he was 5 weeks old (now 4 months). You can read a bit of our story in another thread under this reflux heading. Because he was so young I had the pharmacist make up a solution with the granules so I didn't have to give him so much liquid each time (takes quite a few mls to disolve a tablet, and the granules from the capsule don't disolve at all). We originally got a recipe to do this from Nepean Hospital Pharmacy (if you live in Sydney) and eventually changed to different recipe which we get from "Small's Pharmacy" in Windsor. The Pharmacist there (Edgar) is really helpful and I'm sure if you looked up his number he would tell you how he does it. I don't plan on giving the granules straight until he is started on solids and then plan to mix them in a little cereal or apple.
I'd be interested in hearing what dose your bub is on and how you are giving it now... always on the look out for a better method. Logan is on 10mg a day which we give in two doses of 5mg morning and night.

Hi Logan's Mum, Connor is on 10mg a day too, half in the morning and half at night. I've been giving it to him by spoon which seems to be okay. Sometimes he spits some out but most times it all goes in. I've also now started giving him the Brauer stomach calm because he always seems to have the worst pains in his tummy and is constantly farting! We've recently changed his formula to Karicare HA AR so this may have something to do with it. The chemist said he should settle down on the formula in the next few days and not to change it again. CAN'T WAIT!

Hi Caitlin Mum
After a very stressful 2 weeks I was told by GP that my 8wk old little girl has reflux. Our GP put her on Zantacs (1.5mls, 3 time a day) however after our visit to the paed she is now on Losec 10mg a day. This is only day two and things yesterday were really good but today things are back to the way they were.
I was told by Paed to change her formula to Karicare HA AR & to give her children’s panadol & Mylanta. At the moment it feels like nothing is working but at least she is feeding better - every 2 or so hours.
Isabella also does lots & lots of farts so I was wondering if you could tell me what Brauer Stomach calm is and if it is working for your little?
Also are you able to put your little one down to sleep during the day because unless I am holding her Isabella won't sleep at all during the day.

Hi there, my son is now on Zantac which starting working after 1 day. The really bad wind and farts and pushing though was put down to a lactose intolerance. I changed formula to Karicare de-lact and the change in him was amazing. No more pains in his tummy and no more constant pushing. That formula combined with the Zantac has worked wonders. Although he hates sleeping through the day as well. Only likes to be held (cheeky!!). I am trying to get him to sleep in his cot during the day but it's a bit of a fight at the moment.
Hi there, Just to let u know my little girl has been on losec since 6wks. I had a lot of trouble with the tablets and found a pharmacy that can make it up in a liquid I don't know where u live but Carina Day & Night Pharmacy in Brisbane makes losec in a liquid it is so much easier and u get a better result

Hi there
Isabella was much better today, still can't put here down but at least she was a happier baby (I'm hoping it wasn't just a one off).
I live over the south side of Brisbane so I'll see if a pharmacy around here will do that for me because half the time I don't think she's getting the full dose.
Thanks for the advice.
