Hi All

I'm new on here and I'm sorry if this topic has been done before.

I just wanted to know what everyone else takes as their pre pregnancy vitamin. I'm currently taking Elevit (and have been for about 6 months). Is there any better supplements out there?

Thanks in advance :)

My husband and I plan to start TTC in Dec. We are spending the next few months getting nice and healthy while we wait a few months so our private health insurance will cover the birth.

While we're waiting I am taking Blackmores Conceive Well as it is designed for this preconception period. But once I am pregnant I will probably start taking Elevit. I don't think it really matters which you take as long as it contains Folate/Folic Acid but I know Elevit is the one recommended by some fertility specialiats as it is the only one to be clinically proven and backed by research.

Oh and my husband is taking Menevit.

Am taking Natures Own Platinum Pregancy tablets. So long as you're getting enough folate in your tablets in the early stages.

I am taking Blackmores Pregnancy and BreastFeeding. We are starting to concieve again and have been taking them for the last 2 months. It has Fish Oil in it for the baby's brain where as Elevit does not, so you would have to take a fish oil tabletalso. Blackmores is cheaper and you can buy it in 150 tablets. It does the same job as Elevit. I have a 2yo old some and he is perfectly healthy!!

Good luck with TTC!!

I am taking Swiss Pregnancy Ultive as well as Swiss Pregnancy Fish Oil I asked if this was alright when I had my pre conception check up, my DR looked at the ingredients and said this was fine, when I fall pregnant I will continue taking the same all the way through.

I took & will take again for #2 Blackmores B&P Gold. I don't eat fish & this one contains the Omega3 my diet is lacking. It's also more economical than Elevit & i've heard that some people have become constipated on it too.

Thanks ladies :)

It sounds like Blackmores is better than Elevit. When my Elevit is finished, I think I'll give it a go!

while we were TTC I took Blackmores Conceive-Well, and then switched to the Blackmores Pregnancy and Breastfeeding.

I think a lot of GP's reccomend Elevit as they get incentives to do so from the company distributing it. I compared them all ingredients wise & i found Blackmores contained the most of them all. I also noticed all the pregnancy mags seem to reccomend the Blackmores too(maybe they also got some incentives, who knows). The pharmacist at my work also reccomends the Blackmores too.

I asked this question of my GP, my OB and the dr at the family planning clinic and got 3 different answers!!!

My Ob told me only to take elevit..... which was easier said than done as i am horrid at taking tablets and my MS brought them all back up anyways

Family planning told me either elevit or blackmores

My GP told me as long as i was eating a balanced diet etc i only needed a folate supplement (which i took for the first 3 months) which i could manage to keep down....

had all my bloods done a couple of weeks back and didnt have any defincencies so.....

(IMO sometimes they cause more harm than good - worsening MS etc)

Well now I'm confused. I went shopping today and compared Blackmores Conceive Well Gold with Elevit.

Blackmores was $32.59 for 28 days
Elevit was $52.95 for 100 days

Wasn't Blackmores meant to be cheaper?

Hi Girls,

I use the Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Blackmores. Its about $40 bucks for 150 tabs. I never used the Conceive Well ones as I think the ones I take are pretty much the same.

Hope this helps.

Personally I wouldn't take elevit as it has an absolutely huge dose of iron in it, I would choose either the Blackmores one or the Microgenics one. I think a multivitamin is really important prior to TTC and while pregnant, to make sure baby gets everything it needs. The main things to look for would be folate (folic acid), iodine, fish oil, vitamin B12 and calcium / magnesium.
All the best for your TTC journey, hope it is a short one

Think that would be because of the ridiculous amount of iron in Elevit, don't know why they insist on putting that much in there!

I've been taking the same pre-preg multi-vit for the past year, I like it, but I've just had 2 M/C's so I've decided to swap to Elevit as it has a higher dose of folate (Elevit has 800mcg, whereas I found most other's only had 500mcg).

I think I will take an omega-3 and iodine supplement separately as Elevit doesn't contain these.

I just got a small box so I can see how I go! (bit scared of the constipation everyone talks about!)

... Oh and for anyone in Canberra, you can get vitamins (elevit, blackmore's, nature's own etc.) much cheaper at Discount Pharmacy (in Macquarie or Gowrie).

Wish I had seen this earlier before I made a post in the other section.

Was asking the same question.

I ended up picking up the Blackmores Conceive Well tablets, you have to take 1 tablet and 1 capsule per day and they're big too! But ah well, I used them with DD2 and they helped me. I managed to get them for $20.40 at Chemist warehouse

Elevit hasn't made me constipated but it makes me feel queasy (thought I was having fake pregnancy symptoms!).

I think I will swap to Blackmores Conceive Well even though it's more expensive!

Just to let you all know, Woolworths have 50% off Blackmores vitamins till Sunday this week. I picked up 2 of the 180 tubs for $45 (they were $22.50 each). If they out of stock i was told you can get a raincheck for them.

I'm pretty sure it is Australia wide but you can check by entering your postcode into their website: http://woolworths.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/website/woolworths/whats-new/weekly-specials

I went to Chermside Central (Qld) today and they were sold out so I asked at the service desk and they gave me a raincheck :rain: for 2 tubs which is valid for 4 weeks - go Woolworths.

I took Blackmores throughout my pregnancy and 12 months of breastfeeding with DS. I was taking Blackmores during this pregnancy until a friend got me some pregnancy vitamins on clearance from Woolies which are called Fabfol Plus. As well as folate, my GP said to make sure any pregnancy vitamins contain iodine, which both Blackmores and Fabfol do. Fabfol is good because its one-a-day and the days of the week are on each blister pack. Blackmores is two-a-day and you have to remember if you've taken them or not (I usually try and take them at the same time of day and write a V (for vitamins) on my calendar because its sometimes hard to remember when you've got pregnesia (aka "baby brain").

Good luck with TTC. :fingerscrossed:

I recently saw a gyno/ob for an ovary-related issue, but mentioned that i would be TTC in Jan/Feb 2011 and he told me that if I'm thinking of having a baby in 6 months I have to get onto blackmores i-folic which has iodine. he said that sufficient levels of iodine in a pregnant woman can 100% eliminate the risk of autism and ADD for a newborn. I'd recently done bloodtests that showed I was deficient in iodine, so its lucky I found out in time, and I'm on it now ;)

Everything was normal including my Iodine levels and my son has moderate Autism.
I wish it was this easy to eliminate these disorders 100% as we are now wondering if #2 will too be on the spectrum.

Justinie:hugs:. Were you taking iodine supplements while TTC and through your pregnancy?
