View Full Version : Why do things have to be so expensive?

I have put my kids on the list for swimming lessons, I've been meaning to put them in for ages but never got my backside into gear, they really need it. They aren't that confident in water. It's gonna cost $180 a term for all three. The girls will be in the same group but Nathan will be in another group. The girls have places already but Nathan has to wait for a spot cos his level/group is full. I wish I had more money
Thats actually really cheap for swimming. The pool near us costs $120 a term just for one!
That is fairly reasonable for all three for swimming. It is definitely worth it, swimming is so important.
You could always just take Nathan in yourself for a paddle and to get him used to it once a week to save money :)
That actually sounds pretty cheap for swimming lessons for three kids! But I do know what you mean, everything is so expensive lately.
Unfortunately I had to give up baby swim classes when I was a single mum as I couldn't afford it.
The ONLY activity I could afford to do back then was KinderGym that was run by a friend of mine and her mum, it was free and thankfully my boy loved it!

I guess it is cheap but this place doesn't give you the option of smaller installments, eg $15 a week or whatever like alot of other places, but it's the only place I can put the girls together. I guess I could just take Nathan in myself for a bit, though this particular pool is only used for swimming lessons not lesuire.
It's $170 per term for kinder fees so we won't have to pay those next year but we will have to pay school fees. I wish I was a billionaire.

They have also suggested this school holiday thingy for Skye (she's really nervous in the water) which is $65 for a full week of lessons during school holidays, plus because it's almos the end of term 3 they said I can put the girls in free the last two weeks of this term so I might still consider it.
It is great that you found somewhere to put the girls in together, I remember you posting about it awhile back.
It is hard when you have to pay upfront, I agree, such a bigger chunk....would they let you pay half and then half a few weeks later?
We pay by the week but I am trying to encourage the lady who runs the pool to charge people at least in blocks of 4 because soooo many people just don't turn up and therefore don't have to pay.

Not sure I will ask next time I'm there. It's $500 and something for a full year for all three but not sure if I'd be able to pay half mid year and then the rest later, I think you have to either pay in full (and you go into the running to win a free terms worth of lessons) OR pay each term. A few people have told me it's pretty cheap for all three though, just gotta find the money, I might try and save up for it. I really want my kids to do this. Or did you mean pay half of the term fees? $60 one week and then the other $60 another week? I THINK I can do that but have to find out.

Wow, that is pretty cheap for swimming lessons. It is $400 a term for my 3.
Maybe see if you can save up the first term and pay up front and then ask if you can pay instalments for the next term in advance? So this term will be tough, but then you wil be paying in instalments from then on, and it will be in advance so the school should hopefully be ok with that.
I can understand the pay in advance because I can imagine a lot of people would make less effort to turn up if it wasn't.

Yeah I understand that too. I'm just gonna try and save what I can. If I can pay $60 here and $60 there that'd be good each term.

Wow, that really is cheap for all 3. We usually pay around $400 to $430 or so for our 3 per term. We have to pay a $20 deposit per child next week for next term with the balance due before their first lesson. And thats with a small discount for the 2nd and 3rd child too.
Check if your swim school does it cheaper for the 2nd week of the school holidays with the public holiday. I just booked mine in and it was $150 for all 3 for the 4 days. I think they charged $54 for DD1.

Where we go, it's $157 for the term and that's per child, no family rates, so it's 3 times that amount for 3 kids. I pay half as a deposit at the end of each term for the following term, then pay the other half the first week back so it splits it up a bit.
Guitar lessons are $200 a term lol so there are more expensive things out there but swimming is something I think should be free or at least heavily subsidised for all children under 5, then school swimming at a very cheap rate from the first year of school which is Prep in QLD. I know where DD goes to school, it's $50 a term for school swimming and they do that from Prep.

I agree swimming should be alot cheaper, I guess $180 per term for three kids isn't bad compared to other places that charge that or more for just one.
I agree that swimming lessons should be cheaper. It's hard when you have a few of them doing the lessons. But it is so important that they are strong swimmers and able to help themselves in the water.
