View Full Version : What do your kids call the adults in their lives?

When I was a kid, I would never have dreamed of calling an adult in authority by their first names. It was always Mr X or Miss Y - though I think the nice neighbor ladies were an exception to the rule.
Now that I'm a mum though, it seems like the social landscape has changed so much that it's almost unthinkable NOT to call people by their first names. At least, I can't remember the last time I called a person "Mr"
With the kids, I vacillate between things like "Megs Mum" or "Auntie Mils", and just people's names.
What do you guys do?

My kiddies call our friends Mrs *first name*
So Mrs Kate & Mr Dave for eg.
Very close friends are Aunty or uncle.
Older people are Mr or Mrs *surname*
I was just talking about this the other day...
When I was younger it was always Mr or Mrs X and never first names but now nowdays it seems you call them by their first names...I normally refer to DS friends mums as ie Tom's Mum but sometimes he catches on what theire first names are. At kindy they call the teaches by their first names....times have changed!

She doesn't really call anyone anything yet...
When she can talk though, I'll expect her call her relatives accurately (Nan, Grandad, Uncle, Aunt/y, Mummy, Dadddy etc)...
She can call our close friends by their first names (because I call them that...and it would be weird to hear someone refer to my best friend as Miss So-and-So).
She can call people that we don't know very well Mr and Mrs/Miss. If she doesn't know their last name, she can call them by their first name. If we don't know their names at all, she can just refer to them as "Ms or Sir"...

Though DD is to young to be calling anyone anything just now, when I'm talking to her I refer to my close friends as "Auntie" and "Uncle". Other people get first names. Older people (ie. my parent's friends) are "Mr and Mrs Surname" - unless they ask to be called something else.
I'm "Auntie Wendy" to many of my friend's children :) I love hearing them trail after me "Auntie Auntie Auntie Auntie..." :)
Back in the day when i was a wee lad it was always Mr & Mrs such'n'such unless i was told otherwise, in which case uncle ort aunty was slapped on the front of it. these days, its usually their first name, but sometimes i forget what im suppose to call people so just try and avoidf using any form of title or name where possible, quite easy to do amazingly.
Its first names for my DS for close friends. I dont believe in calling people aunts and uncles if they are not. We do have one set of friends who are and aunt and uncle but they are a very mature aged couple and for some reason that just felt right.

DD calls our closest friends Aunty and Uncle, and their kids call us aunty, uncle (just 2 of our friends)
My opinion is calling people mr and mrs is way to old fashioned and they will not be addressing people like this unless the person asks to be adressed like it or if they are thier teacher.

I am so happy you said that... I have never called DP's parents anything, and my best friends' parents from when I was a little girl, are not called anything either.
One of my best friend's sister became a teacher and worked at the same school where my dad was the accountant. Of course she was on first name terms with all her colleagues, but could not bring herself to call my father anything other than Mr___.
I am so glad I am not the only name avoider out here !

Same as poshBecks....actually I think we started most of that cause our kids were first, but we think it works really well.....cause alot of people our age don't want to be called Mrs *surname* so Mrs *firstname* is a nice compromise iykwim.

I don't usually call DH's parents anything - or if I do, it's Mr and Mrs... (my mum always called her MIL and FIL Mr and Mrs... my dad however called his MIL by her first name - weird!) Anyway...
I worked at the school I went to as a student and for 4 years couldn't bring myself to call some of the staff (who taught me!) by anything other than Mr or Mrs...
DS will call his auntie's and uncle's auntie amanda and uncle azza etc. Grandma, nana etc. Our friends will probably be first name (or auntie... etc) but older ppl will definitely be Mr and Mrs.
I still call my relatives auntie and uncle, nana... and older ppl (unless asked to call them by their first name) are Mr and Mrs...

I am so happy you said that! I probably used their first names in a very low voice when we first met, and at our engagement party my MIL said to call her mum! I was not comfortable with this, so for the past 7 years I have not called her anything! I think she does notice this. :o Anyway, having DS has helped because I can now refer to her as Nanna.

 when me and DH were going out he didn't know what to call my mum so with him on the phone I asked her what she wanted him to call her and we decided on Myrtle?!? Her name is nothing even remotely close to this..... and it kind of was a joke, but 9 and a half years on it still stands!! hahaha
