View Full Version : Time saver at 2am!
Everytime DD wakes in the night crying for her bottle I'm so conscious of the fact my DH needs to get his sleep that I'm in a right flap trying to get the bottle warm, mix the formula and stop DD crying blue murder! Those 4 minutes it takes the bottle warmer to heat the milk seems like hours at 2am! I've been warned against using the microwave by midwives so for me, that's not an option at the moment.
Anyway... I think I've solved the problem! Before I go to bed I pour 70mls of cold boiled water into the bottles then fill a thermos flask with hot boiled water. Then when I hear DD start to whimper in the night all I need to do is add 50mls from the flask into the bottle, add the formula (all takes under a minute) and then that allows me to get to DD before she cries the house down and wakes herself up completely! Phew!

Good idea!!!!
I've always used the microwave and shake the bottle like mad so the heat is evenly spread. DS only has his bottle lukewarm - to take the edge off the cold.

I too was initially reluctant to use the microwave.............but now I realise it's the only way to do it! As Tam said, just shake it really well so there are no hot spots and you will be fine.

 Good thinkin!
I started using the microwave to heat DD's bottles of water at around 4 months, before then I used toput it in a huge mug and wait for it to heat up....lol how silly I was... but really ,if you shake it vigerously it will be completely fine! but it's totally up to you.
To also save some time scooping the formula out at 2am I used to put it in the formula dispenser all ready to use

I only ever used the formula dispenser when I went out with DD. God, what was I thinking?! A few years on and a few more short cuts & I refill mine and use that all the time. Makes it easy for someone else to sort the bottle too, without having to ask how much of formula, how much water etc ...

I always nuked mine too, followed by a good 15 second shake.
I have used the microwave for nearly 11 years to heat bottles. I have never had any problems with it. I find if I heat it in the microwave first then add the formula there is no hot spots as you have to shake it to mix the formula.

When I give DS a bottle, I take it frm the warmer (on the lowest setting) and put the bottle in for his next feed straight away. This keeps it at the right temp, ready to go when needed. We always check it first, but it is never too hot.
We too started off using the bottle warmer but i know what you mean, it takes ages at 3am to wait when you have a hungry bub.
We then decided to use the microwave and havent gone back but I think your suggestion is fantastic! Fortunately our lil man stopped his night feeds at about 8 weeks old, can only hope we are lucky like this is we ever have any more bubs!:fingerscrossed:

I would have thought that leaving a bottle in a bottle warmer for a couple of hours would have been a perfect breeding ground for bugs. Formula is supposed to be thrown out half an hour after being made if it isn't used.
That's what I thought too. You could leave a bottle of WATER in the bottle warmer then just add the formula when it's feed time.

I certainly wouldn't drink milk that had been left in a bottle warmer for a couple of hours. :barf:
ds has his at room temp now so its easy, he doesnt like it heated

I brought a kettle called a shark and it keeps the temp you set it to all night long so all i have to do is get up and pour the water in a jug and sit bubs bottle in it and the boiling water warms it in minutes plus i generally get up the minute she starts to make those waking oohs and ahhs before it becomes a full blown scream.N ot to mention its hot and ready for my coffee at 7am.lol:D :smiliedance:

If I use the microwave for heating I heat only the water then add the formula, as someone else said.
With DS I used to boil the kettle, stick the bottle in a cup of water, then go and change his nappy. When we were done the bottle was ready to go.
With DD right now, she goes from grunting to screaming in about 1/2 a second. You'd think her throat was cut! LOL She also screams when you change her nappy so we have to do things differently to how we did with DS. We tend to give her a dummy while we wait for the bottle, cos otherwise she gets herself too worked up to take the bottle. Of course, this only works if your child has a dummy normally.

I have one of these too. When DS was getting up during the night for feeds I used this kettle and it was great! I use it during the day for his bottles too!
My dh works strange hours..... this idea will save us all from going totally nuts.
