View Full Version : Formula and its affect on bubs attitude/sleep (recommendations needed too!)

DD2 is on S26 Gold, and I am starting to wonder if it is affecting her attitude/comfort/sleep.
I have read of people switching formulas and their baby becoming happier/sleeping more etc, and I'm just wondering at what point do you start assuming its the formula.
DD2 is constantly wanting to be held, and I mean literally constantly, she is being held 24/7 and at 1 month old, you would expect so I guess. If she wants to be held; you hold her. I'm happy to tend to her needs, thats what I am here for. I have a sling, but she literally isn't happy unless she is in your arms. Can't even have her laying on your lap, HAS to be in your arms.
If I put her down, she groans etc as if she is trying to fart, and moments later she starts crying. When I put her down asleep, she starts groaning the same. She still groans when being held, but she doesn't cry. She does pass a lot of wind when she is doing this. She hasn't slept in her bassinet in 3 days!
So basically, I'm thinking it's the formula causing her discomfort, but I only want to change ONCE, so I would love some recommendations on which formula is the best, and why?

I've heard the 'gold' of any formula can cause upsets.
DD is comp fed with regular s26 when I can't express 250mls in a day, but probably such a small amount wouldn't make much difference compared to full time ff babies.

S26 has higher iron levels which can make babies constipated. Both mine had that problem and the best one for them was the nestle nan formula. It didn't seem to make a difference if I got the gold or not so I'm not sure about that one :)
Good luck :)

Damn, I just got my partner to go and buy a whole tin of s26 gold.. Didn't realise this about different formulas. S26 is what the hospital used so I figured it must be the best! Luckily he's mostly breast fed, may even just chuck the tin away - he does seem quite uncomfortable after a bottle..

Both my bubbas were constipated and unhappy on S26 Gold so we switched to plain for both of them and its much better.
I know its $25 for a tin so you are unhappy you just bought one, but you'd spend $25 in a heartbeat to go to the Dr for some advice on what's wrong with bubba...
If you hang on to that tin and just wait a couple months then give 1/4 feeds of gold and the rest plain you will gradually use it up without constipating baby.
Good luck.
Same here had a lot of success with the Heinz nurture but the s26 gold caused constipation and bubs was very irritable. My health care nurse said the ingredient that they use in the gold formula can cause constipation etc and certainly for us that is exactly what it appeared to do. So yeah I would try the Heinz nurture.

What exactly does the "gold" mean? My bub is on the gold one - is there a secret ingredient or sth?? ;) a secret ingredient that makes all bubies sick! You'd think they'd adjust the recipe!
Made2beamummy - you're right, bubs being well and happy is most important, money is not an issue. However on the s26 formula tin it says the formula needs to be used withing 4wks of opening.. Does anyone actually pay attention to that rule??
I may try the Heinz stuff very soon...,

Sndgroper the s26 gold has omega 3 and a few other things in it that the normal s26 doesn't have, thats the only difference.

Yep! But only cos DS goes through a tin every 5 days! We did try to switch him to reular S26, but it made him vomit after every feed. He is lucky enough not to be affected by constipation from it.
OP, TBH, Your DD sounds exactly like my DS did for the first 12 weeks of his life!!
If you do switch formulas, just remember to give it at least a week to see if it makes any difference, and don't chop and change to often or it will upset her belly.
Good luck! :)

Sorry, not true. I read a fact sheet somewhere on bub hub (ive just done a big search trying to find it and cant ) and S26 GOLD has ATLEAST 0.1mg per 100gms more of each 'ingredient/vitamin' (include some extras vitamins) then S26 REGULAR. With this said DD has been on S26 GOLD since 6 weeks, took her 10 days to get used to the formula but even now shes still constipated, lots of yellow seed like things in her poo, seems to get a belly ache atleast once a day, she does have reflux though so not sure how much of it is related to that. She stayed in hospital recently and they has regular S26 and she seemed to be alot better, not sure if the different bottles/much much easier to burp her, had anything to do with it though  Even though it 'seems' S26 GOLD is better then REGULAR, I caved and brought a tin of REGULAR this week, today will be her first day on it so interested to see how it goes.

Every baby is different, so you might be on the right track, good luck.
Like I said, S26 Regular was terrible for my son but he is thriving on the Gold. Just depends on what the little bubs belly can handle

I found that s26 constipated my kids even on comp feeds.
I have always used Heinz Nurture regular and my kids have always done well on it.
The ONLY formula that worked for DS was Heinz Nuture. I tried about 8 different ones, even the ones specific for reflux, and they all made it worse. Heinz was the only one that helped. He was a different baby after I found Heinz. Plus it's cheaper ;)
