View Full Version : Constipated 16wk old
My DS is 16 wks and we have had to start topping up with forula at end of day!! He has been really irritable for a few days and today I could see him physically trying to poo and only getting a little pallet out!! He is getting 240ml of formula split between his last 3 feeds for the day otherwise it's Breastmilk the rest of the day. What do I do? How can I help him? Any suggestions please!!

Maybe change the type of formula. Some formulas, like S26, are know to cause constipation in babies.

Brown sugar & warm water will do the trick until you get the right balance for his lil system :)
Not nice to see a pained little one.
Good Luck x

Yes i had to change formulas for our 2nd DD. I just bought the same brand as my eldest had but it did not agree with Sarah at all! Changed brands and she was fine after that. Good luck, I know how horrible it is watching them strain like that. ((hugs))

Stop giving him formula
Why does he have 240ml split between 3 feeds?
Boil up some prues in water, strain it and give to bub. or you can buy the jar of prune juice in the bub section.

I did this for DS when he had constipation as a little bub. Works a treat. Dont need many prunes. just add a few to the water while boiling and then give bub a bit of the water to drink (completely safe)
Good luck. poor little fella
Our chemist recommended Infant's Friend. It is all natural and we use it a few times a week when our twins are showing signs of constipation. It helps things along and they are so happy after all has been released!:)
Thank you everyone:hugs: will swap formulas as i was using S26. He finally got it all out last night and it was pretty hard then followed by some runnier poo (sorry for the TMI) will try these ideas if it happens again. All in all a much happier little man today :smiliedance:

I don't find this necessary as i wasn't asking for opinion on weather I should give my DS formula
to answer your question, I must just feel like it..... no no I must just be a bad mother.... :shame:
Actually I dont want my DS admitted to hospital with a tube up his nose for being too stubborn about exclusively BF... when your baby is almost kilo under the 3rd percentile at 16 week and screaming for more food please feel free to judge me and ask silly questions again.....

Actually i find YOU a bit rude.....this is what you said

So my suggestion was ...stop giving him formula.
I never said you were a bad mother, i was just wondering WHY you needed to give him formula in the first place since he is being breastfeed....
So if your son is 1kg under the 3rd percentile i would then ask are you going by the charts in the Child Health Record book or by the ones especially for breastfed babies? Because they will show a very different picture. My kids always rated low percentiles to but the exclusively breastfed percentiles showed a different picture.
I merely answered your question, you are the one who is rating yourself as a bad mother as i didnt say such a thing.
I am sorry that I was rude but I was quite offended your post! There just seems to be alot of bottle bashing on this site! I am all 4 bf and have seen many experts and I'm doing the best I can. However every mother has the right to feed their child the way they like weather it be BF or FF without anyone saying they should or shouldn't. I will make sure I make myself more clear that I was asking advice on constipation in the future. Once again I am sorry I was rude and lost my temper but I still disagree that that part of your suggestion was appropriate

Doing a great job!! sound like a good mother, at least your still BF and trying to get those nutrients in! I top up my 5 month old occasionally, glad he got it out, i used a tiny bit of prune juice with some boiled water when mine was constipated last month, doc recommended, worked great!
