my son had a seizure about six-eight months ago and another one yesterday. Now on both occasions i've been told he had a high temperature so they were febrile convulsions. I'm really scared because i don't think that's what it is. Yesterdays one was really bad, he stopped breathing for so long and went blue. While I was getting out of the ambulance paramedics took temp and it was 39.5 she said, I walk ten steps and the doctors take it again and its 36. so i'm really worried that was just a coincidence. Yesterday was the wost day of my life i've never been so scared.
Any advice? should I go to paed and ask for an EEG? (sp?)
Any thoughts, experiences greatly appreciated please

dd1 had a febrile convulsion when she was 18mths old. this was caused by high temp. 41.3:eek: this is normal apparently, that if the temp rises very quickly, thats when their bodies cant handle it, therfore convulse. you can take bubs to a paediatrician who can organise further testing (spec if there is any family history of this) although they generally say, that it could happen a couple of times and never happen again. (this is what i was told with dd1) i would never want to experience it again though, so :hugs: to you

I remember when my younger brother had febrile convulsions caused by a high temperature. I was about 5 and remember running around the house screaming 'he's dying he's dying!' - my Mum would run a cool bath to try and get his temperature down. I believe that he did have some sort of test afterwards to determine if there was any other cause to the convulsions and if there was any damage done by the convulsions to his brain. My Mum made once made the mistake of putting her fingers in his mouth (as someone had mentioned for her to do so he didn't swallow his tongue) and he bit down really hard on them.
I know how scary they are - just for peace of mind I would go to a paed. and get tests done - if only to rule out every other cause of these convulsions.

Hi Alexandra, sorry to hear about your day. I know how terrifying it is so my heart goes out to you and your family. My son had a couple of seizures around 18 months ago. Originally I was told it was due to fever (this was even before the doc took his temperature, and he hadn't even been ill). Thankfully he had another small one in the doctors office and they sent us straight to the hospital in an ambulance with a letter stating what had happened and requesting further testing. The hospital then said it was reflux) regardless of what our doctor had witnessed...they said GP's often misdiagnose!!). Only when they saw one first hand did they go on to do further testing. Our EEG was clear but the problem was found in the MRI. I would encourage you to seek further testing if you are really worried about it. I was told some of the testing such as MRI's are expensive which is why they don't do them until they have ruled the more common things out and have good reason to.

I know loads and loads of children have seizures with no known cause which are due to fever or simply outgrown....but there are plenty of us out there who have found an underlying problem and the earlier you can pinpoint what treatment, if any, is required the better. Fingers crossed it is just one of those "baby things" for your little one.

My thoughts are with you.

Mum's intuition is a wonderful thing. If you're concerned then push to get the test done. If the worst that can happen is it comes out clear then it's not a bad thing.

thanks for those replies of advice girls, yes i'm making an appointment with the paed because i struggled so much seeing him like that yesterday now I can't take my eyes of him. so i'm going to ask for tests to be done. He hasn't even been sick and noone in our family has ever had febrile convulsions. That very second when he stops breathing and turns blue I think i just wanted to die with him. You feel so angry with everyone don't you, especially the ambulance. they took forever to get here. i'm praying it won't happen again, i couldn't bear it.
thanks for the advice and support girls

my son has had about 10 febrile convulsions . these have ranged from just slipping out of conciousness to going completely blue as you say. yes they are scarey but most kids will grow out of them...thankgod. my ds got an eeg as when he had scarlet fever his temp went to 42 c and he had about 4 convulsions in a couple of hours.
i have epilepsy so im hoping ds does not get that as its hereditory but i had an eeg and mri which did not show the epilepsy. it took a sleep deprived eeg to finally show it, which can only be done to adults as you need to stay awake for 24 hours. i hated having the mri, if you can avoid them try. having epilepsy , enclosed spaces are not good.
febrile convulsions arent caused by the degree of the temp its by how fast it rises so by the time you get panadol into bub its too late. the best thing to do is let your baby have the seizure, and monitor afterwards. they will be sleepy for a while after it.
good luck
