I am stuck in a terrible situation. I need to take Emergency contraception but I am breastfeeding and I have got conflicting advice from pharmists.

1 said my supply would diminish and I cannot breastfeed for 3 days..

The other said it is safe but hormones will be passed to baby..

Has anyone taken it or know if I can.. Desperate

I have taken it while BF - the pharmasist said that while a small amount of the hormones will get to bub it was not much and not harmful - but it might depend on the typr of emergency conraceptive you have been given too - one is a single tablet (thats the one I had) and the other is 2 tablets taken 12 (I think) hours apart/
HTH :hugs:

not me but I know someone who took it and it was the end of their bf'ing relationship. It's like a super strong version of the pill and you can't take that when bf'ing so I don't know why you were told it was safe to take the morning after pill tbh.

i was told i would have to pump off the milk for 3 days. didn't end up taking the pill because i didnt want to stop breastfeeding (i knew it would be the end of breastfeeding for us if i did). i didn't end up being pregnant, so i was thankful for that.

if it's any consellation, i did read somewhere that even if you dtd during ovulation, you only have 25% chance of being pregnant. i guess it would differ from woman to woman, though.

I think you should speak to a gp. I don't know if any of us are drs so wouldn't be taking it as 100% advice in this situation. You said you need it after you talk to a dr instead of pharmacist then you can make the decision of what is a bigger risk

Thank you all for the input. I actually rang a pharmacist I know and he said it's NO surprise I was given different advice. He said on the Royal Womens Hospital drug advice site they use it states it is safe to use while Breastfeeding however on the drug itself advice says no breastfeeding for 3 days.

He said this will be due to them not doing sufficient testing through their company and airing on the said of precaution like many other drugs.

He gave me the number to the Royal womens drug advice line and I will call them tomorrow morning when they open.

Areca - I am sure you can take the pill while BF?! That was the only info I could get on the ABA site.

Secretsquirrel - any side affects? Did your milk supply stop etc?

Thank you

You can take the mini pill. The MAP is not like the mini pill. I think (I haven't been on the pill for years) that the mini pill has no oestrogen which is what makes it okay and the map has high doses of oestrogen. Something like that - if you google the mini pill it will explain better I'm sure.

I didn't have any side affects and nothing happened to my supply I was giving feed at a space of more than 4 hrs so(I can't remember exactly how old he was but it was under 6 months as I had not had a period yet) I just took it after a feed so the chemicals had more time to get out of my system before he fed again, to lessen the amt he was exposed to!

The MAP - appears to contain only Progesterone in a high dose - the fact sheet that is online from the Qld Health says":

The morning-after pill (Postinor-2) is quite safe for emergency (http://www.health.qld.gov.au/ph/documents/childhealth/28106.pdf) contraception. (http://www.health.qld.gov.au/ph/documents/childhealth/28106.pdf)

But ring that health line you were given to be on the safe side - I live in the NT and apparently they allow a few things that other states don't
