Do you think Tony Abbott and the Liberal Party will bring back a form of 'work choices' renamed?

How will this affect you or the people around you?

No I dont think that they would bring back any type of 'work choices' legislation .. even if they won this election.

Yup - pretty sure something will be brought back in. In THEORY some parts of it are fantastic....others - downright terrible.

How it would affect us? If they strip penalty rates for weekend work and overtime - DH will be working huge hours away from family with no extra compensation. The thought that they can sack him without reason is also pretty scary. Especially considering the company he works for was taken over a few years ago, and they ALREADY keep 'making up' 'jobs for the boys' (mates that were made redundant by the other company closing down a similar factories nearby. They have already 'created' soooo many jobs for their mates, with work choices, they would just be able to sack the ones there to make way for their mates. Basically the new company that took over have ZERO business sense, and have been running a good company into the ground - with more power to make stupid decisions on the workforce - I can only imagine how bad things would get.

No I don't think so. Not an Abbott fan at all so I'm not supporting him, but too much has been made of it for it to ever see the light of day again. It would be political suicide and the Libs are far too strategic to risk it.

ETA: It never affected me or anyone I knew IRL so I can't really say what kind of impact a re-introduction would have.

I think all the work choices 'anti' campaign stuff is pure scaremongering ... as the PP said

but too much has been made of it for it to ever see the light of day again. It would be political suicide and the Libs are far too strategic to risk it.

The old WC didn't affect me as I'm a sole trader.

Also - the only reason they were able to bring it in the first time, was because the Libs had power in both houses of parliament.

No matter who wins government, it is almost assured that the Greens will have the balance of power in hte senate.

For this reason if nothing else, it will never be re-introduced.

Another reason to vote for The Greens! :)

If they get the ability to do so, yes I fully believe it will. We didn't personally experience anything - my DH is on contract already and always has been, and it's always been a company-wide one that complies with award minimum conditions. It was renegotiated in the middle of work choices and was pretty much the same, and it's due to be renegotiated again at the end of the year (every 3 years). I'd like to hope it isn't affected because he's on the lower end of the pay scale and in the last contract that scale rose $10k :D The owners are decent people who look after their full time staff though - I have heard it's different for casuals.

Anyway I do have friends who were severely affected, though, then affected again in the GFC - so I worry for them and people like them.
