I have just started CC'ing my 11mth DS and while its going well so far, I have come across a few questions which I'm hoping some of you can answer?

1. Towards the end just as he's about to drop off, sometimes he tapers off but the tapering off goes over the 10min mark. Should I go in or not? If I do, I find that sometimes he gets worked up again. But if I don't then I feel bad for not going in after 10mins. He'll go quiet for about 20secs, then he'll start off again fairly loudly but slowly go quiet again after 1 min.....

2. I have been told that I don't have to CC all the day naps as well as the night sleeps - that I can just concentrate on getting the night sleep right and not worry about the day naps. Is this correct?

3. Is it ok that I move C back to the bottom end of the cot once he is asleep or should I just let him be? He tends to wriggle up the cot so that his head is up against the headboard. This isn't so much a cc question, just one out of curiosity.

4. If I accidentally wake him, do I just apply the resettling cc techniques as per normal?

5. I've heard of cases where CC simply does not work for some babies. How long do I do this before I know, that it's not working?

I think this is all for now... knowing me, I'll think of some more as soon as I turn this notebook off!

if you can tell from his cries that he is dropping/tapering off, then don't go in. the length of time that this stage lasts will most likely start to reduce fairly quickly once he starts to self settle. alternatively you may find that the actual crying stage stops quickly, but he keeps the tapering off kind of crying that you describe - that's what my bub did anyway. i take it when he is crying you go in and shush him or something? (i presume that cos you are wondering whether to go in when he is doing tapering off crying) i think maybe if he has started to drop off to sleep but is still like whimpering then it would confuse things for him if you went in.

i guess it depends how he is when he has his day naps. we still did it for our bub, as we figured it would make more sense to keep things consistent, and that he would learn to self-settle sooner. how many/long are his day sleeps?

my bub is younger than yours so i haven't had this problem! if he did i would wonder too... i know that if i did move him during hsi day nap he would wake up, but i think if i did it after he goes down for 12 hours at 7pm he would be fine to move. he tends to be a little more easily fully awoken at lunchtime.

4. If I accidentally wake him, do I just apply the resettling cc techniques as per normal?

yep - though i know with mine he is easily disturbed during his long afternoon nap and if yours is the same then maybe he would take longer or actually unable to settle back to sleep.

5. I've heard of cases where CC simply does not work for some babies. How long do I do this before I know, that it's not working?

to be totally honest i would imagine there is a tiny amount of bubs that can't self settle - i think maybe it doesn't work for some bubs if the parents aren't consistent and don't do it all the time, don't always put them in the cot when they are still awake as opposed to rocking them to sleep and then putting them down etc etc. it is a hard thing to do but IMO it is worth it. but you have to do the exact same thing every time.

hello by the way  !!

Hi hon,

I cant really answer most of your questions but....

If at the end of 10 minutes he is nearly asleep...DO NOT GO IN! Oliver (admitedly O is 4 months) does this tapper off *im nearly asleep* cry too, and if you go anywhere near him he wakes up and then you are in trouble.

As for where he ends up in the bed, as long as he is warm enough, I would leave him be. :) Just make sure the blankets arent up so high that if he wiggles DOWN again they cover his face....that could be dangerous!

Best of luck! I was reading your other post too, you are doing a great job. letting your baby cry is the hardest thing in the world!:hugs:

Thank you Mischief and Flowerpot21 for both your replies and support!!

I'm constantly questioning whether what I'm doing is correct or not....

Flowerpot21 - WHIMPERING!! Yes - that's the word I was trying to think off when I said tapering off! LOL!!!!!!!! I had been sitting staring at this monitor for 15mins trying to think of that word....... complete mind block!
His day sleeps are pretty much just catnap. But now that I'm cc'ing him, his day naps are about the 1.5hours - 2 hours which is such a relief for me.

it sounds so horrible though doesnt it - *whimpering*

can just imagine what anti- controlled crying people will think of that!

good luck with it!
