Hi,

I had a 35 week scan today to check bubs size b/c they think his a monster!

Measuring at 37.3 ..

The sonographer asked if bubs kidneys were checked at my 20 weeks scan ... which I am sure they were?

I had a 12 week scan, 20 week and a 26 week and his kidneys have never been brought up - why now and what does bub having dilated kidneys actually mean?

He said I'd have to check with the Doctor after the report had been done???

I feel pretty ill and am worried .. can anyone offer any advice or info on this??

Quite common, if you search on here there are heaps of threads about it.

My dd had it, they kept an eye on her kidneys, fluid levels etc from 30 weeks till she was born, then had scans, urine tests, etc when she was born.

All worked out ok for us, sometimes it can be hormonal, other times ir requires treatment.

I wouldnt stress until bub is here, they do more tests and go from there!!

Good luck!!

Thanks, I've read a few things - and about it being related to downs syndrome ...

bit worried.

When did they find yours? (At how many weeks?)

Is it usual to pick it up so late?

They were going to induce me in about 2 weeks ... so not sure if this will change that?

Wish the Doc would hurry up and phone me!

They didint find DD's till 30 weeks either.... and then I was on weekly scans as it can affect amniotic fluid levels... DD's were low, but nothign to worry about!!

There are many causes, as I said hormonal, sometimes there is a slight blockage, or the urinary tube could be malformed, there are sooo many posibilities...

It sholdnt change when they induce you at all, is there a reason you are being induced?!? My DD came at 40+10 and they said this made no difference to her kidneys at all..... )I was induced too)

waiting is the pits hey!!

Hi darl

Everything will be ok :hugs:Something like one in every two babies will have dilated kidneys. My son had it on his left side.

They picked it up at about 36 weeks and all we had to do was have an u/s on his kidneys when he was 6 weeks old to check on them. :)

Hey guy's,

Thanks for your replies :)

Chicken - being induced b/c my last bub (no 2) was 4.3 kilos and this one is already 3.3 at 35 weeks - and b/c of my pelvis I have prosterior bubs ...

Yes waiting sucks ... I am so sore, tired and impatient!

The hospital called me back today but said that the Doc hadn't looked at the report yet and that they would call me tomorrow morning ... fingers crossed it's nothing bad ..

Kattus - thanks - one in two certainly makes me feel better!

Yer huge babies! They estimate this one to get to 4.8 kilos if I go full term! :o

Oh ok ... well the Doctor is phoning me tomorrow so hopefully they can let me know a bit more too ..

Thanks for the reassurance though!

 I've had to get a urine sample before and I think getting one from a boy is easier than a girl might be (but Ive got 2 boys so not sure) - but at least the sticky bag goes over his you know what! :D

Fingers crossed for 'normal' results!

Thanks :hugs:

So .. the Doctor phoned today - said bubs will have to have an ultrasound at 2 weeks after his born and then if it's clear then great - if not he may have to be on anti-biotics till his about 5 months and if it still hasn't gone - then have a mini operation

Fingers crossed all is ok after he comes out ..

Yup, the scans are easy peasy!!! dont stress about those. get yourself some recommendations for a good pead in your area if you can. (are you public or private??)

ha, urine sample from a girl is hard!! LOL - it def comes down to correct positioning or you end up with a wet floor.

The results you got are quite common.

There are alternatives to the antibiotics, esp if he isnt getting urinary infections. I did loads of research into the surgery, and from all accounts I read, it is positive and somethig that doesnt happen until bub is older!!

here is you need anything!!!

Hi Girls

Came accross this thread and thought i would share my story. My sons kidneys were dilated at his 19 weeks ultrasound - he is 10 now. They did the whole, nothing to be worried about but have another later scan which i think i did and i think they were still dilated. I was very young and blaze about it all and even though it was on his file no-one followed it up when he was born and sent us home. It was a long time ago and i can't remember why i didn't follow up and if i just trusted the dr's or who knows - i was very young.

Anyway, ds was 9 pound 4 when he was born and appeared to be very healthy. At 3 months old he got very sick with fever, wouldn't feed and was lethargic. I was so young and kept taking him back to the gp who kept sending us home. In the end i rang my mum hysterical because he was so obviously unwell. We took him back to the gp and demanded action - somehow she referred him for an ultrasound of his kidneys on the spot and it was found that his kidneys were dilated. At this stage the fact that he had also had dilated kidneys in utero came back to me and he was immediately admitted to hospital. They spent the first 24 hours stablising him and then ran many tests and discovered that he had a blocked right ureter. One of his kidneys was fairly normal and the other one was huge. They sent us home on antibiodics and at 6 months he was admitted and they cut away the blockage, entered a stent and sent us home. After this he suffered many setbacks and kept getting recurrent infections even though he was on ongoing antibiodics. At one stage they put a nephrostomy tube in his back, draining his urine straight from his bladder and he also had many catheters. Anyway, i don't mean to scare you but did want to empower you with some information incase your son does have a blockage or issue when he is born:

- when my son was a baby a surgeon recommending having him circumsised while he was undergoing the surgery. The paed didn't agree and i didn't have it done. At the age of 7 I had my son circumsised because he was still suffering from recurrent infections - he has only had one urinary tract infection since. I very strongly regret not doing this when he was a baby, it was so awful putting him through this - he was so sick and the wound got infected

- years of antibiodics wrecked my sons baby teeth before they even came into his mouth. If there are other alternatives and he isn't getting infections, i would explore this. My poor son's teeth used to just crumble and he has had so many fillings in his baby teeth. Luckily some act of faith has given him strong adult teeth which are now coming in. He also became immune to the anitbiodics eventually and when he got common infections, he got very sick.

- when your son is born at the first sign of illness take him to your gp and do a urinary test, if it is inconclusive get them to do a follow-up blood test

I hope this hasn't freaked you out. My son is so healthy now and the only way you know that he has any issues is if he drinks too much softdrink and not enough water he sometimes gets what appears to be a uti but only lasts for a short time.

let me know if i can give you any other info. I know a wonderful paed at the womens in Melbourne.
