View Full Version : 30 min days sleeps HELP PLEASE
as i sit her and hear my 4.5 month old son waking again after only 30 mins sleep and i am my wits end . . .
Everything i have read says that if they wake after this amount of time i should go in and resettle him (CH nurse suggested this too)
ok so how do i resettle him when i go in there and he is wide eyed and smiling away?? i go in dont talk to him dont make eye contact and trying patting, shhhing, stroking his face, humming and he still just smiling and laughing
so i think ok he is awake then, i pick him up and about 20mins later he is screaming and tired again
I AM AT WITS END PLEASE HELP
What works for me is i go in a lie on the floor put my arm through the cot and pat him on the chest until he stops crying then i get up with no eye contact and walk out . Let him cry for a bit and do this again.
It does take time, but now DS sleeps for 1.5-2hours each sleep.
I'd get him up, and then put him back in his cot when he is tired again.
Both my girls did this at that age too.
The trick that i found worked for us was wake to sleep. you go in about 10 mins before they would normally wake up and i know this sounds insane but you rouse them up just enough to bring them back into light sleep eg. pick them up and then put them back down, unwrap then re- wrap them or anything that will get their eyes to flicker. What this does is help them jump the change in sleep cycles which is when they normally wake up. Ok you still dont often get a 2hour sleep but it means they will normally sleep at least 2 sleep cycles instead of one and then can stay awake for longer.
mum to tahlia 3 and eowyn 7 months
i think youve got 3 options here.
1. start teaching him you are only coming in to get him when he has had a sleep. This means letting him cry and only going in if he is getting really worked up. Not for everyone. drives you nuts for days but probably the quickest way to teach them. requires consistency and a heart of stone *kidding-but it is hard*
2. You can do what LilMissnBoo sudgests
3. Go in and getting him after his 30min nap, get him up but leave him wrapped up (if your not still wrapping them wrap his bed blanket around him just so his snug, and take him for a walk/drive/bounce and cuddle round the lounge room and encourage him to sleep for longer periods. Once he falls back asleep which may take 40mins, put him back in bed and repeat till its time to get up. (this is similar to option too but this way he probably wont be a grumpy pants till he has fallen asleep again
My DS2 was doing this. I was advised to try and resettle him in the cot and let him cry for a bit etc. I just didn't feel comfortable with it though, and he was all smiles and wide awake like your little one. Anyway, a friend suggested and start wrapping him again and also leaving him up for longer between naps. I mean he's over tired anyway, so it wouldn't make any difference. And also to get him into a routine. And it's worked a treat. He had a two hour nap today. Good luck! It's certainly tough.
