Just a quick question, can you get the carers allowance if you have a child with anaphylaxis and severe eczema. TIA

I'm pretty sure the answer is no

Yes you can. But it has to be dxed by the allergy clinic at a hospital and it has to cause you to use a certain amount of extra time above what a normal child needs. We had it.

Thanks both of you, I have been told yes you can and also no, so I am really confused, my son is anaphylactic and has very severe eczema which covers all his hands/feet/legs and part of his arms and he is also asthmatic, he has had all the allergy tests thats how he got the diagnosis of being anaphylactic, I do spend a lot of money on steroid creams/soap free washes/creams/bandages and also the Epipen and even special blankets/pillows.

It's not so much the diagnosis, but how much extra work the condition involves (above what you regularly have to do in looking after a child) that determines whether you are eligible or not.

ETA; It's worth applying for it anyway. I think it can only get backdated from when you first apply, so apply early even if you then have to follow up with extra supporting info

You'd have to fill in the Carer's Allowance long form (ie: lots of questions on his development, needs, etc). If you play up on the questionaire that he is a risk to himself or others (the fact that he's probably irritable from all the itching can be a starting point) then Centrelink are more likely to take notice than if he just needs funds for creams, etc. If you have a good paediatrician they should be able to help you fill out the form for greatest effect.
