So I am thinking about getting the baltik amber teething necklace and I have heard from everyone who loves them, but..... I wanna hear the other end of argument...... if there is any.

I dont like the idea of my children wearing something around their necks, dont believe they would work for US when i have children who have been dependent on morphine.

I'm thinking of getting one for my 4 year old son for his asthma, although I'm very sceptical of any "healing" properties in any stones... I really do think it's a bit of gobble-de-goop.

I'm willing to give it a try though but only now that he's older as I'm another who cringes at ANYTHING around a baby's neck apart from clothing.

i believe it's a total load of crap. i don't believe this magical oil comes out of dead stones (the stones don't even become smaller or anything).

i tried it, and i think it's just a massive placebo.

it's like those hippies who use homeopathic stuff, but then say "oh my baby is so ill, i am thinking of giving them panadol" wtf? so your homeopathic stuff doesn't work then??

I am not convinced that mine works! But my son is a particularly cranky child. I find that even when he is wearing it, and teething, i still have to give panadol

lol..thats a lot of anger over crap..

It didnt work on DD1 but has worked on DD2.

So I dont know if its different kids or what???

i am one of those hippy mums that use homeopathic remedys...but if my child is still in pain and not getting better I will use panadol..

I do believe that the stuff works but sometimes and in some circumstances panadol works better, if i can refrain from giving my children panadol then AWESOME.

Hahaha that IS a lot of anger!

Quick question from an ignorant one :o - do they chew on them like teething toys or are they just supposed to help with energies and what not?

Just meant to help with energies.

I agree!
Panadol is not very good for kids my dd is 10 months and I am only just onto my second bottle! I don't believe in drugging my child as one day she may get really sick and be immune to all the chemicals and toxins people use to "make there kids better". My opinion! I was doubtful of this necklace working and who knows of it does all I know is dd teeth just appeared no change in behavior, no fevers or drooling nothing so I am not game enough to take her necklace off!!

I'm quite open minded and willing to explore alternative options, but I was given two different amber teething necklaces and neither seem to have made a difference. Having said that though, DD is generally a happy baby.

I also don't like the idea of DD having something around her neck... DH thinks she looks like she is in a cult or something LOL.

I keep them wrapped around my wrist though.... so any energies, if any, can be rubbed onto DD during a breastfeed

I am a sceptic. I've got one and I don't think it does much if anything, BUT I've just oredered a 2nd one as I'm willing to give it another try and hope I just got a dodgy fake one.

I also hate having it around the neck, so I wrap it around DS's ankle and put a sock over it. No one even knows it's there unless I mention it.

where do you get them??

Dont ignore the power of the placebo.

They probably are placebos. But if you percieve your child's behaviour to be slightly improved, it has worked.

Baltic amber is a resin not a stone. They are not the same as things like crystals ie not energy giving but are supposed to secrete an acid that has anti inflammatory properties. I have used one on my 21 month old recently as he has been getting all four of his second molars at once and is super cranky. I am not totally convinced and have still given him panadol a couple of times but I think he has slept better since getting it.

I'm a sceptic. True amber is very expensive and it's very hard to tell the difference. So I think there is a high chance many people are shelling out a moderate sum for a form of plastic.
I also know a people who have recently moved here from various parts of Europe. Including one lady who is a Paed from Scandinavia. None of them have ever heard of using amber necklaces on babies.
I also don't like the idea of things around babies necks, let alone beads that could come off and be a choking hazzard.

Kobismum- try whiskers on kittens (search them) x
Succinic acid is the element that works as an anti inflammatory. I started my daughter with one as i hated keeping her on panadol and nurofen. We put a necklace on her at 4 months, and she was getting her first 2 teeth. She now has 11 teeth and she had no more panadol at all for any of those teeth once then necklace was on, until she was cutting her back one a month ago and i thought she was a bit miserable.

Hope that helps

I have one, & so does DD- I didn't find much of a difference, although I would not let DD sleep with it, and putting it around her ankle didn't work either as it just fell off.

So, I'm not sure, it's not something you can measure.

I agree with what Lilahh said- " Dont ignore the power of the placebo.

They probably are placebos. But if you percieve your child's behaviour to be slightly improved, it has worked."

Personally, I'm a big fan of DD's teething necklace, so I can't comment on the negative :o

But for those of you who are worried about putting them around bubbas neck, when DD was younger (she's had hers on since she was 2 months old) I used to put it on her ankle instead and pop her socks on over it to stop it falling off. It kept me from worrying about her choking on it but it still helped. :D

Dd still wears hers and she is getting close to 3.

i bought one for my son purely because it looked cute!
anyway he only wore it a few times as he had a chubby neck & face so it would get rolled up at the front of his neck. i wasnt keen on it.

Yep we have been using one since dd got her first tooth at 4 months. She still wakes up screaming in pain some nights, think it was a waste of money, but I was willing to give anything a go

I swear by mine! got it from whiskers on kittens online. DS 11months has had it for a few months now and don't know if its coincidence but has slept through the night since i put it on him. Im not going to complain!
The one that i got has a knot tied after each bead so if the necklace does brake the wont all fall of and it also has a plastic clasp so if force its put on it it will break and not choke. But its personal choice i guess.

I thought it sounded very 'far out' and a little crazy when i came accross the teething necklaces but thought i would give it a go as i was desperate to help my bubby and take her off panadol and nurofen constantly.
I swear by mine!! She has been wearing it since 4 months and is now 20 months with plenty of teeth (and much much happier!!)
Try googling whiskers on kittens.

The healing benefits are not just new age belief.

They absorb succinic acid from the amber through their skin, they should not be chewing on the necklace.

I was a sceptic, but bought one when I found a stall selling genuine baltic amber at a gem show.

It was amazing to me to see the difference, and even more amazing when I left it off DD for a few days. She became the cranky crying teething horror again!

I even convinced my Dad to try one for his bad neck. After 2 weeks of wearing it he no longer had to take any pain killers. He accidentally left it at home when he came for a visit, within the week the pain was back.

I know you wanted a 'didn't work for me" scenario...but I was a real sceptic...Converted!

Yes. I bought one for my son and it didn't help him at all. Some people swear by them though, and I don't doubt them. It just wasn't helpful for my child.

If it works it works.

I don't like the idea of putting something around a bubbas/toddlers neck, Jasper would most certainly wind up getting caught on something (probably jumping off something with his luck)

There's very few things I'll go against a parents wishes with when child caring, but I refuse to let babies sleep with their amber necklaces on. My anxiety around them dying I find is just as strong (and sometimes just as irritational) as it is with Jasper, so I just can't do it. But I put it back on when they wake up

I could not get past the Claim that "Body heat releases oils that leach into the bloodstream" bit. She got massive welts externally and I hate to think what damage may have been done internally.

You could put it around the childs ankle.

Thats what we do..it goes around twice...most of the time its on her ankle.
