Yesterday, on our way to Barwon Heads, Lukey broke out in a rash.
His arms and his face were covered. I immediately stopped the car and called the Nurse on call number and from what I'd described, she thought it was hives. I then found a chemist (no easy feat on a Saturday afternoon!) and bought some Claratyne (dang! I was really hoping for the phernergan!!!:p ) and within 3/4 of an hour the hives disappeared.
The chemist also agreed that it was definately hives.
He did go to a birthday party at Hungry Jacks that morning and ate their chicken nuggets (which he's never had before - I'm a Maccas gal!) so other than that, I can't think of anything that would give him this type of reaction. His clothes weren't washed any differently and everything else he'd had that day he'd eaten before. My question is how long after eating/touching something does the reaction occur? Could it have been from the day before? Is there a way to definately find out what gave him the hives in the first place? Will his reaction to this substance become more severe with time? Questions questions questions!!!

Well i break out in hives when i eat too much citrus like say tomatoes & oranges as does Boof & it pretty much takes a few hours to hit our systems & react.
But if i have eaten way too much then it can only take 15mins !
I am bad cause i love tomatoes & nothing in this world not even hives will stop me from eating them lol ! :shame:
The only way i found out what it was that gave them to me ( this happened when i was in high school ) was to work out what i had eaten all weekend & work out whether i had something different or whether i had something to excess this is what my doctor made me do anyways. I worked out i had pretty much had my normal weekend routine of eating but had cheese & tomato sandwiches on the Saturday then cause my parents went out for dinner i again had the same for dinner then Sunday had the same for lunch ( can you tell i like set things :p ) problem was because i had been home from school on Friday yep you guessed it i had cheese & tomato sandwiches lol ! At first it was thought to be the cheese but i cut them both out for a few weeks then tried the cheese first with no reaction again waiting a few days & then had tomatoes to which i had a slight reaction. So we worked out what it was & i was told to cut back ( pffft yeah right ) i did learn my lesson one time though cause i ate heaps one week with having spaghetti, sandwiches etc so i was covered head to toe which was rather embarassing for a 14yr old ! So i do watch myself but its hard sometimes but as soon as i feel it coming on i know to slow down. The same happened a few months later with oranges & manadarins bummer !
Never had any issues prior it was as though my system finally overloaded.
But there is a good chance Lukey will grow out of it most kids do but if your unsure talk to your doctor & see what he says maybe he might want to do a blood test for allergies to work out if there is anything severe going on.
Hope all works out fine :hugs:

So ally, do you think it could have been something in the nuggets that could have done it, because I'm at a loss to think of anything else he's eaten - the night before he devoured 3 bratwurst sausages but I thought if it was the sausages then he would've broken out in hives earlier than the following day (around lunchtime).

Sounding suspiciously like the nuggets.

I had problems with the sandflies in Darwin - would come out in hives, get a fever and an itch like you wouldn't believe (would wake up a couple of times at night to have pine tar baths to try to soothe it). When my step kids came up to stay with us - they had similar reactions (but not as bad, so it supports the thing that if you're going to grow out of reactions it probably happens as my hubby never had a reaction), I gave Claratyne as well which worked pretty good for them.

The reaction would show up a few hours after the bites, but would be worst 24 - 48 hours after. My hives would stick around for a week without antihistamine (I took Polaramine) but would be there for about 3days with.

So what you have now is an experience with a food allergy and a topical allergy. Not sure how typical my reaction (and my stepkids' reaction), but since you haven't described anything different that Lukey had or did except for the nuggets - it sounds like they're the culprits:detective:

Curious as I thought the Macca's ones and the HJ ones were the same (don't like either - the KFC ones are better:p ) Now you've got me thinking tho'...I want to start a is Maccas or HJs better? Me, personally - I'm an HJ girl:)

I would definately say its the nuggets !!!!
Got remember they use a crumb over theirs unlike Macca's that use a batter !
If it had been the bratwurst ( mmmm yum now im thinking we might have to have ours for dinner tomorrow nite lol ) he wouldve woken up with them either overnite or the morning. Id say there is either a chemical or ingredient in HJ's nuggets that have caused a reaction ! Or maybe they use a different oil to fry in ?

Peg - There is a big bloomin difference between them !!!! See above :p

Ah - now I'm showing my ignorance - I only started eating Maccas (except for the breakfast menu) when they put their healthy choice menu on the board. I'll eat that now, but otherwise always preferred a whopper or a grilled chicken burger than a big mac or a mc chicken. I mean, where is the salad in the
2 all beef patties
special sauce
lettuce
cheese
pickles
onions
on a sesame bun?

I like my tomato (although you'd have a problem with this:p )

*Off to start my thread now*

LOL !
I just never got into the swing of HJ's they taste funny :p
Plus what was rather off putting was when we lived in Darwin for awhile there the HJ's would stop making burgers after a certain time so would make up a bulk lot so you got a microwaved burger .... :barf:
Im sorry but microwaved tomato & lettuce have never done it for me :p

Gotcha - there are heaps more Maccas in Darwin than HJs. When we were up there I ended up in Maccas heaps more than in HJs (I only just realised that now - what a revelation). Oh - besides the breakfasts - the McFlurry does walk all over the plain sundae!!!

Getting back on track (and yes I joined the great fast food debate)

The bad thing about allergies is that they can start at any time. Last year my DH devolped hives after a shower. Took us a day and several baths to work out her was allergic to the soap we had been using for MONTHS! We now only use natural soaps otherwise he breaks out again and thats after 28 years of using normal soap.

Hopefully its the nuggets as thats an easy thing to avoid but maybe just keep an eye on his skin in case its something else - helps narrow it down.

Thanks everyone for your replies...
So would any of you give him another nugget from HJ's just to see (or is that being terrible!) - I might go to their website and see the ingredients for their nuggets and compare them to Maccas - might be a place to start!
Trust Peg and ally to hijack a thread - only you two can make a hives thread into a debate - HJ's vs Maccas!!!
For what it's worth, there is no contest - Maccas wins hands down!
Oops wrong thread.

MD - Your not hijacking your own thread are you !!!!

I would give him a week or so & then yeah i would try again because that way you know its definately then & can steer clear of them ! Otherwise its back to the drawing board of working out what did it !

I've just been on their websites and the only difference between HJ's and Maccas that I can see is that HJ's uses:

Food Acid 270, Colour 102, 110 & Hydrolysed Plant Protein

Whatever the hell these are!! Might have to do another search.

Some common additives that may cause problems
Some food additives that may cause problems for some people and their code numbers include:

Flavour enhancers - monosodium glutamate (MSG) 621.
Food colourings - tartrazine 102; yellow 2G107; sunset yellow FCF110; cochineal 120.
Preservatives - benzoates 210, 211, 212, 213; nitrates 249, 250, 251, 252; sulphites 220, 221, 222, 223, 224, 225 and 228.

This is taken from the better health website from the Victorian Government - it's just interesting to see that the 2 colours that were different to the Macca's nuggets come up as being a potential problem for allergy sufferers - coincidence? :detective:

Id say its the colours that have done it but then maybe its the acid !

Aahhhhh there ya go !!! :shame:

i cant eat the HJ's nuggets it triggers asthma attacks. but i can eat the macca's ones and the red rooster ones and the kfc ones. although i dont eat much takeaway :)
i would say its possibely the additives that caused the hives.

Thanks for that jess...I really didn't think that there'd be much difference in their nuggets. I might take him to the doc and maybe get an allergy test done just so I know for sure.
