Hi there,

I'm wanting to buy a baby sling / baby carrier and was completely overwhelmed by the options in the shop today... and the huge price and style variations.

I want one that will be good for my back, and nice and cool for the summer months.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. i'd love to hear what has worked well for you.

Thanks so much.

It's hard if you want both as I found that Baby Bjorn Air was best for hot summer days but terrible for my shoulder and back.

Ergo Baby AND the new Baby Bjorn Comfort are best for your back and shoulder and bub sits in them. Please note that NOT all Baby Bjorn are good. Only the new Baby Bjorn Comfort, which looks very similar to the Ergo Baby.

However, price wise, you'd better get an Ergo as it is now 'only' $139-159 whereas Baby Bjorn Comfort retails for $289 here (or $210 incl postage if you buy on Ebay from US).

I know this because I have tried four different slings. I sold one of them, and I have the Baby Bjorn Air which I can't sell as it was given by MIL upon my request (so it's not fair if I sell it after I use it and I am not happy with it), Ergo Sport and the new Baby Bjorn Comfort.

I'd second the ergo! I also have a hug a bub which is a wrap type sling, i love it. It takes a few tries to get used to putting it on, but it soon becomes like tying your laces!

:iagree: I was going to suggest these two... I do have a bad back- I loved the HAB for a newborn and young infant and find Ergo good for heavier bub. Just my experience.

A relative wants to give us their Baby Bjorn they used 5 or 6 years ago...would they be completely different now? (sorry to hijack your thread!). I'm tempted to buy a new one and tell them it was a gift.

i'm another who says *ergo* all the way.

although it does get a little hot in summer (then again, wearing a baby is just a little hot - but i love it anyway).

i would just get a piece of material (probably woven? rather than knit) about 2-3m long. 50cm wide, and just use it as a hip-carry sling for those real scorchers where you just want as little contact with anything warm as possible  [rather than buying a second sling/carrier for another 80+ dollars.]

HTH's

[eta: lemonpancakes - i wouldn't use the babybjorn at all. if you're interested in that style of carrier, get the ergo. in all the baby bjorns, their major feature is that the baby hangs by its crotch - so it can face inwards OR outwards. i don't know about you, but i can't imagine that hanging like that is comfortable. just my two cents]

Ergo! 20 months old 14 kg toddle can breast feed comfortably on the front. On the back is very comfy for hours. HIGHLY recommend it!

Though for a newborn I like a sling (I made myself one) or a wrap (again made myself) because it's a bit more snuggly.

BabyHawk Mei Tai, Kozy Carrier Mei Tai or Catbird Baby Pikkolo are my fave picks for carriers :)

Hug-a-bub for a newborn, then an Ergo for sure. If you only want to buy one though, then go for the ergo and get the infant insert. You can also get a cheaper version of the hug-a-bub on ebay (called Sleepy Wrap), I have one and IMO it's just as good but half the price.

I would steer clear of the Baby Bjorn, they are terrible for bub to sit in (not to mention your back).

Yep avoid bjorn. I had a bjorn synergy thinking would be great for my back. Even though it's for up to 12 kgs I could only carry 8 kgs before it got painful. So that was about 4- 5 months (i think - pushing memory here!) old cos he was a big bub. He still loves being carried and some times it's very convenient.

Ergo:yes::yes:

Without ergo I'll be housebound. I catch train with DD in ergo and push 3 year old in stroller. I am a small person but it's so comfortable:yes::yes:

Thanks everyone!

I will be getting the Hug a Bub sling and the Ergo thanks to your tips and experiences. I don't mind spending the money if it works well.

Thanks again.

Ergo ergo ergo ergo..... did I mention Ergo?

Ergo sport is a bit cooler for summer.

We have a baby bjorn (old style) and a sling as well, but the Ergo wins hands down. If we have another bub we'll be getting an infant insert for the Ergo, won't bother with the BB or sling.
