View Full Version : How often is my BF baby supposed to poo?? TMI
Sorry if this is TMI, my totally BF DD is now 5 wks and for the first few weeks of her life she did a poo (nice big explosive ones) about 1-2 times a day. Last week it was only once every 3rd day and now she has not had a poo since Wednesday. I am waiting for it as Im sure it is going to be a whopper as they usually are!
Is this type of frequency "normal"? She is healthy in every other way and has 7-8 wet nappies a day and feeds well and has also gained very well too. Do I need to be concerned?
Thanks for reading

Elise is now 3 weeks old and I have to change a pooey napy about 3-4 times a day! I have heard that BF babies poo a lot more than formula fed babies. Sorry I cant offer more advice on how often exactly they should poo, when I was in hospital, the middies seemed more interested in ow often she was weeing than how often she was pooing as this shows that thy are not dehydrated.
HI
This is exactly what happened to my bub.. I spoke to the CHN and she said that 'normal' is anything from one every ten days to ten every day.
Hugh is 8 weeks old and he doesn't poo everyday. He's very healthy and growing exactly along the 50 percentile line.
i think all babies must be different. Since posting this thread about an hour ago, she has done a massive poo so all is well! took me about half an hour to clean her, me an the change table though!!

BF.... bottle or breast? Breast fed babies can go up to 10 days my DD was a 3 times a day baby now every 3 days but she grumbles if she doesn't go very tiresome!!

My DD is fully BF & to my surprise only poops once a week! Thet are not huge either (TMI) & she is healthy & happy. All my DS'S were once or twice a day bubs, so in the beginning I was a bit worried but apparently it is fine.
When my BF baby was about 10 weeks old the LC at the breastfeeding clinic warned me that sometimes they might not poo for days (up to 13-15 days!) and then when my baby was about 15 weeks..... she didn't poo for 12 days! And then when she did she let it all out!!!
The CHN said the worst she had seen was 19 days and they were getting worried but it was a whopper!! :p
She is breast fed. She seems much more relieved now and had a good cry afterwards the poor thing, I wonder how they can store so much of it inside of them!

MJ is still BF & only goes every few days. When she was younger it was every 10 days like clockwork. I would plan my trip around it as it was HUGE. If we were out it would spread from her toes to her neck :barf:

Maybe a little advice... lol
When DD was solely breastfed I kept a box of cleaning gloves next to her change table...
'Nuf Said! lol
All mine have pooed differently....honestly cant remember DS1 or DS2's bowel movements, they are too long ago....but my DS3 pooed with every nappy, and even now he is 2 1/2 he still can poo 1-3 times a day. My DS4 can go 2 days without a poo....
My diet hasnt changed much that I can think of, so that cant be the influence....maybe it is just metabolism? who knows....
I have heard though, that the texture of their poos can show you whether or not they are getting to the hindmilk...usually curdlike poos show that they are. If all your bubs poos have this, then it is probably just high metabolism. If they poos are just yellow fluid (with no little chunks in it), it might be that bubs isnt getting to the hind milk, and this can contribute to more frequent pooing. If this is the case, try feeding longer at just one breast....I usually wait for a 2nd let down reflex when they are munching on my boob (when it appears they are just using you as a 'dummy') as this lets down thicker milk (the hind milk), and they usually take a few gulps, or start drinking again.
More than likely though, you might just have a 'poo machine' (which is what I affectionately named my DS3 as he pooed every nappy and even pooed during the changes, during the first 6 months till solids were introduced) :D
I love bubhub, I really do.
My boy poos every nappy (or it seems so anyway) and they are definitely curd-like.
If he suddenly went ONE DAY without pooing I would have freaked and stressed and panicked.
but now I won't. Yay.
thanks ladies. I am forewarned once again and very happy. :D
Like everyone has else said, for a breastfed babies anything from several times a day to once every ten days is normal. Breastfed babies don't get constipated (as a general rule, I'm sure there are exceptions but it's nothing to be concerned about) so no need to worry.

DD did poo every day, but from about 7 weeks she started to do massive poos anywhere from between 3days to 12days!! O the joys of motherhood!! :D

 for months my BF baby daughter pooed only every Friday at exactly 10am. You could have set your watch by her. At first I was worried like you but once I realised it was all normal I was dissapointed when she started a more regular routine.
Apparently BFing is so efficient the babies really only take what they need and there just isn't a lot of waste. Now would someone please tell that to my baby son!!
