Given that voter apathy and difficulty getting to polling booths can have a big effect on the election, in this technological age, why can there not be a system put into place where voters are given a username and password like internet bakning or whatever, and votes can be made on the net?

The main reason is security. It is difficult to ensure that people only vote once and the system is not hacked.

At the moment, if there is any concern, there is a paper trail that can be checked manually if needs be.

Also, the conducting of elections and counting of the votes is not too onerous so there is no need to move to online voting. :D

Remember, if it is difficult to get to a polling place on election day you can get a postal vote (http://www.aec.gov.au/election/pva.htm)or vote early (pre-poll vote (http://www.aec.gov.au/election/early-vote.htm).)
