hi all,

well the hospital finally got in contact with me about my prenatal care and i noticed on one of the brochures that they like you to have a papsmears if u haven't had one in the last two years or ever (i've never had one, yes i know i'm bad but thats just me) i know it says on the brochure that having a ps while pg is perfectly safe but i don't know that i'm comfortable with the idea and espcially it being my first time! just wondering if anyone else has had on while pg? guess i just need some reassurance

Mine was considered a 'risk' pregnancy because I had miscarried previously but my OB gave me a Pap at about 10 weeks because it was well overdue. No issues at all.

Hi,

There is no need to have a pap smear in pregnancy, you are best to have it 6 weeks after your baby has been born. Because in pregnacy the cells they are hoping to find are very difficult to pick up due to the protective nature of your cervix and vagina at that time. It can also be very difficult to actually find the cervix in late pregnacy as it tends to point to your spine with the front wall of your uterus pouching down infront of it.

You can not be forced to have a pap smear just so all the boxes are ticked in your file (if you feel strange about it just refuse)

On a side note, if you have not been over active (more than a 2 partners in the last year) and have not suffered any sexually transmitted diseases (HPV or HSV) you would be at very low risk anyway.

I don't think that the risks of cervical cancer are anything to be downplayed. I have had two good friends, both in their late 20's have cancerous cells that were picked up in a Pap Smear. Both of them had to have major surgery. One had only ever had one partner and the other had been sexually inactive for more than a year. My MIL had to have a hysterectomy due to cervical cancer just over a year ago and she hadn't had a partner for almost 20 years.

Regular screening is essential, the risks are unfortunately there for us all.

Sorry I'm not attempting to down play the risks which are considerable, I was only saying that it is not the best time to take the smear. pre pregnancy or 6 weeks post birth is better time.

I was due for one in May but kept putting it off. I have a friend who had a smear done while pregnant and ended up bleeding and cramping for 2 days, so I'm going to ask that mine is done after the baby is born.

Mine was due when I got pregnant with DS2, I think (from what I can remember) the doctor said to wait till after 4 months. In the end I didnt have it till the 6 week checkup - the easiest papsmear I have ever had - but then again I am abnormal :D.

unless you have had cin1 /2/3 then you wont know complete facts u have only quoted half in your info its not just sexually tansmitted diseases any of you past partners that have had warts on their hands or other part such as legs then you are at risk i never suffered any std but ended up with cin2 at the age of 28 and it was my gyno that told me it donest have to be caused by sex also it can be dorment in you body for years before you imune system gets low and it can surface so please dont be complacent about this subjet was one of the most scazy thing ive had to face

I had a pap smear at my first OB appointment at 10 weeks - it was as uncomfortable as they always are, but I quickly forgot about it when I then heard DDs foetal heartbeat.

When I got pregnant with Jacob, my GP asked me if I'd ever had one and told me off when I said no. She just assumed that I'd been sexually active for more than 2yrs, when in fact it had only been 8mths. :banghead:

I had one with DD1 no dramas, and DD3 while pregnant.

My last one about three weeks ago came up highly abnormal with two different sets of cells so I am off to the Hosp. next week for further tests & biopsy.

If left untreated, my Dr told me they would most likely turn into cancer, so at 28 :(

I had a papsmear just before I found out I was pregnant with DS and the test came back inconclusive... When I went to my GP a couple of days later to confirm my pregnancy, I asked him about my results and said that it was probably due to being pregnant and to have another after bubs was born... The net one came back normal...

If you're not comfortable having one while pregnant, I would wait, but definitely organise for one to be done at your 6 week checkup... After having a baby, a papsmear really is nothing...

All the best

I had my first pap smear 8 weeks pregnant with DD. Not a problem

Just to add to what Rynosmum said, I had two friends both 21 yrs old, have pap smears and they came back abnormal. 1 had grade 2 cells, the other was borderline 3. The one that bordered 3 had had a pap smear 8 months prior!

My OB asked at my first appointment at 8 weeks when my last one was (ummmm..... never :o ), and then (as I was panicing about having to get one....) said that he preferred to wait until the postnatal 6 week check up to do it (PHEW!!!!!).

I loved my OB though. The first internal I ever had was the day I gave birth

I was told from the very beginning of my pregnancy that they'll do a pap at my 6 week post-partum check (which is in a week. EEK!)
Last time I had one done it didn't hurt or anything.. my doctor even ran the insturments under warm water so it wouldn't be cold!

i had one done when i was 5 or 6 weeks pregnant. it was ok. but i would be getting them done regularly. your birthday (or other easy to remember date) is a good time to get one that way you shouldn't forget.

they don't hurt and generally if you have a woman dr they will warm the instruments for you.

I didnt think they were meant to do them as they could accidently rupture the membranes???

I have never been offered one while pregnant, and to be honest it kinda defies all logic to me...

What also needs to be considered, is that if you are pregnant and have a smear, and it comes back abnormal, what would you do? What would your Dr/Ob intend on doing? Terminate the pregnancy to have treatment? Run more tests that could be inconclusive or have false results? It depends on the outcome and whether you are willing to act on a bad result.

I had one at 12 weeks pregnant with DS, and unknowingly was pregnant again the last time I had it done. There were no dramas.:)

I had a papsmear while pregnant with DS1 cause i was 24 years old and never had one, it doesnt halm the baby in any way, there is a chance that you can spot for 24 hours afterwards but they say that is nothing to worry about.

how did you go with your biopsy?? i posted earlier this year about this issue. before falling preg i had an abnormal pap smear come back indicating CIN1 and HPV (!!!!). i had a colposcopy that confirmed mild CIN1 and HPV (which freaked me out as have never suffered STD like symptoms....). anyway, plan was to do another pap smear in 6mths just to keep an eye........a month later i fell preg!!
am almost due now and now that i will soon have not have pregnancy to worry over i am starting to worry again about the CIN1 thing.......

ooooh. it's hard being female!!!
