View Full Version : What do newborns sleep in???
Ok, so I'm getting a bit confused about what newborns can and can't sleep in... I need help!!!! :o
We're getting a cot (probably a pioneer boori atm), but can little bubs go in a cot straight away or is it too big for them. I know you can get bassinets but all the ones I've seen are all lacey and well... flouncey, iykwim
I saw a tetra snuggle bed on the babymall website - has anyone used one of these? And if so how long did your bubs fit in it?
I've also seen those moses basket thingys which look cool, but are they just for short trips (kinda like a porta-cot) or can newborns sleep in them all the time?
Oh  and has anyone used the Preston ezee rocker that you attach to your cot?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
DD was born at the end of Nov and she went straight into her cot. She looked tiny in it but we didn't want a bassinet and the cot was fine.

I had 2 winter babies and a summer baby, all 3 went straight into the cot.

Ellie and Heidi both went straight into the cot. I did have bassinets/cradles for both but I tended to mainly use that during the day. Night-time was always their cots and they loved it.
If you are having a winter/baby, I highly recommended the sleeping bags you can get. The fit like a little jumpsuit at the top, arms and zipped up the front but has a sleeping bag bottom. Keeps them nice and snug warm and they can't wiggle out of them :D
honestly i use snuggle beds till there 6mths good thing about them is if you go out for the night and drop the baby at mums u can take that with you and they settle easlyyou can put it in the cot it has washable cover and i cant live with out it they cost any were from $109 to $119 the are tetra so the breath and the dont cost what a bassnet does but do the same job hope this helps

DD was in a basinette till she was around 3 months old, now she is in her cot
cobey sleeps in an old-style bassinet at the moment. He day-sleeps in his cot. I like the bassinet because it's small enough to be in our room at night :D
Wow! - thanks for the quick response everyone :yelclap:
I'm happy to hear that bubs can go straight into the cot, I thought I was missing something...
I do like the idea of using a snuggle bed so bubs can have naps at other ppls houses and it'll be (almost) just like home.
Thanks again :D
ds slept in a basseniet for the first 3months:D

The beauty of those first few weeks or the first couple of months is that sleep associations don't usually start until bubs is about 2-3 months old and technically, if it works for you, they can sleep anywhere!
-Bubs can sleep in a hired/borrowed/purchased moses basket or bassinette for a few months until they get too big (and for some it's easy to move them from room to room while they sleep)
-Bubs can sleep in a cot from birth, or in a tetra snuggle bed inside the cot to create a feeling of closeness/snugness despite the space around them. And like Mich71 said, once they have formed an association with it, it will make settling easier elsewhere.
-sleeping bags are fantastic once they start to wriggle free from their wrap. But many new babies love the feeling of being tightly wrapped in appropriate fabric (cotton flannel is nice in winter, so is cotton muslin in summer) because it reminds them of the womb. And they often settle easier when they are wrapped- as they grow, they know it means 'sleep time'. This is the same for the sleeping bags and many older babies have only started sleeping through the night after these were introduced! My babies included! But they loved being wrapped to start with.

I used a bassinette when i wasn't co-sleeping, but next baby I REALLY want one of those swinging hammocks.
That's very handy info pookiesossige
...especially about the sleep association, I think I was scared that if I didn't get the sleeping situation right, right from the start I was in all sorts of trouble!

We put bub straight in the cot and never had a problem. Swaddling makes them feel safe. We considered something to put in the cot that we saw in a shop, but the SIDS foundation advised me to avoid them, so i did.

Our first baby went into a bassinette from birth, and transferred to a cot a few months later with no dramas. We'll do the same with our next bub.
DS went straight into the cot :)
Hugh slept in his fantastic pram (I'm so in love with it!) for the first week out of hospital then we started putting him in his pram in his room for a week then just put him in his cot.
Bubby sleeps in his bassinette next to our bed (and in our bed a bit as well).
Bassinettes are good because you can wheel them around the house i.e. bubby had a touch of jaundice so I wheeled the bassinette next to the sunny window for his daytime sleep.
He is in the lounge room with us, asleep, at night till we got to bed and then we wheel him into our bedroom, so from a portability viewpoint the bassinette is great, especially when they're brand new and you don't want them out of your sight.
But you can do this with a moses basket until they go into the cot at night anyway.

I have found this the same for both my 2 cherubs.
Even though it seems like they're fighting it - and they always seem to wriggle free towards the end of their sleep, they feel secure.
Ethan is now associating the wrapping with sleep time - he lets out a little cry, sometimes fights it (for a whole 10 seconds) and then will zonk it. I can't complain about him and his sleep. Tayla was exactly the same.

we ll we used a phil and teds carry crib/papoose thing cos Matilda not having a bar of the cot..now she sleeps in her cot some of the time but if she really sooky goes in the carry crib thing with a soft feece blanket under her...our early child hood nurse said fine as at least she happy and sleeps in it...I will be really sad when she grows out of it...as it been our life saver and means she can be in it in cot, in our bed on the kitchen table, take it to friends etc...and she feels secure...
Think depends on baby and a real suck em and see thing as I had all plans for her to go straight into cot. we dont have basinette...and she wasnt coming to the party...so I so glad I bought the carry crib...

DS was in his bassinet for about 3 months then he went into his cot in his room. The cot would not fit in our room and someone gave us the bassinet as there girl could only fit in it for a couple of weeks.

i have been looking alot at these safe n sound umm damn i have no idea what they're called, they're just basically a support for a child in their cots.. its not a whole bed or anything 0-0 looks like that but larger lol! sorry ive had a blank.. baby lays in the middle of it and is supported on both sides, makes it nice and easy to tuck blankets over the top and avoid them riding up over babies face. i'll be purchasing one of these when the time comes. If i remember correctly they're only $28 in Big W
I had one of those with DS1. He learnt to roll over at 5wks and a week later, he was rolling straight over the top of it, so it was really a waste of money.

We were given a bassinet and I had my DS when we first came home, as I had major surgery and was limited in movement, (more convenient).....but he went into his bed at 1month (I think, was so long ago-13months..lol), he went straight into a cot...you just have to remember to put them with their feet at the end of the cot, and adjust the blankets accordingly......we never had a support to stop him rolling, just put him in their...no probs.....
Personal preference I think......

I havent had my baby yet but havent bought a bassinet. I did buy a tetra snuggle bed because you can actually put it inside the cot to keep baby more secure while its so small. Im also thinking of putting the snuggle bed in my bed so bubs will be in my room with me in the beginning.
Thanks for your replies everyone. Now I have too many options instead of too many questions
This seems like the right placen to ask this question..
I was told yesterday that you cant out your baby to sleep in the bassinets that come in prams ( the portable ones) as they are not sids approved or something??
Has anybody heard of this, and are you able to tell me what the reason behind this is?? I too am having difficulty deciding what little one is going to sleep in...

To the OP - there's no reason not to let bub sleep in the cot from day dot. He/she will let you know if they are unhappy with it and if it is a problem, you can then find another solution to suit your family. We coslept from birth so DS would sleep in our QS bed on his own for day sleeps and until we went to bed at night. New mums are a marketers dream  and it is so easy to fall into the trap of buying all these unnecessary 'things' because they are sold as being 'best for baby'.

When researching/buying our pram 3 odd years ago, I heard the same thing. The reasoning is that most prams do not have a firm supportive base for a baby to sleep on for long periods and the sides can tend to be a bit high which will restrict airflow. The only two brands that were safe for babies to sleep in back then was the Emmalunja (sp?) and the Bertini Bidwell. Both of these had firm bases which could recline flat and they also had ventilation holes for improved airflow.
i too would like to know more about this!:)
Ahh, thanks for that.. Thought that may be the case but wanted a mothers advice rather than a sales assistance as sometimes you dont know if its the hard sell or legit advice, so thanks again...
