Hi everyone,
when I breast feed my son he doesn't seem to stop wriggling and moving around. He also keeps pulling away from me when feeding and then wants to come back and this has started to cause me some pain.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Any suggestions as how I can get him to feed properly and stop moving so much?
Thanks heaps
Hi there. I too have that problem, but now he is also scratching and pinching and causing dear ole' mum bruises! My son is six months old now and has always been a very active feeder.
Anyway, depending on how old your son is, you could try swaddling him while feeding? Or sitting in a very quiet place so he doesn't get as easily distracted? Also make sure he is attaching properly (if he is very very young and you are still working all that out) as if he isn't he may not be getting enough fast enough due to poor attachment?
Or, my bub used to do that at the beginning at the feed when he was younger because my let down was sooooo fast that it would choke the poor luv!
Sorry i can't be of more help. Good luck with everything!

Does he winge at all? Is this just new or has he always fed like this? My bub did this when she had oral thrush. The lactation consultant told me that it was uncomfortable for her. If not, then could you try and hold is head still?
Sorry I can't be more help, but I know how you feel cos my bub wriggled and winged through her feed when she had thrush. But all is good now.

Thanks for info.
My son is 6 1/2 mths. He also scratches and pinches me, and it hurts! He also winges somtimes. Iv'e tried holding his head but he gets to frustrated and then pulls away really hard. I thinks he also gets impatient when the let down takes awhile.
Do you think he is too old to swaddle him up? Maybe I'll try that.
It can be such an effort and struggle to feed him somtimes.
Do you think the let down could be taking some time due to poor attachment?
He tends to like to attach on the edge of my breast and not properly.

That could be affecting it!
My DD started pushing the breast away when she was about 6 months for no apparent reason. Then all of a sudden she went back to normal. Wierd!
Hi there, Bubbles 28.
My daughter is 5 months old and has just started doing the same thing. She wriggles and scratches me and pulls off suddenly when I am feeding her due to distractions. She also gets frustrated and cries while feeding and also doesn't seem to latch on properly now and likes to suck just the end!! and when I try to get her latched on she usually cries more.
It can be very frustrating but she seems to like one side better - better let down I think, and when she's satisfied on that side I swap to the other side.
Glad to hear I'm not alone but sorry I don't really have any answer.
I've read some babies go off breast feeding and then one day just go back to normal as Briannabear mentioned.

Oh WOW!, everything u just mentioned in your post is exactly what my son is doing. My son also favours one side. I hope this doesn't affect the milk supply on the other side. Maybe some babies just go through this at this age. I hope he will start feeding properly soon as it can be frustrating, and hopefully to u too.

Hi Bubbles28,
How is your bubs doing. My baby girl (Tru) is still being a wiggly worm, she is just starting solids so maybe she is not accepting the boob as she is not that hungry anymore???? I always give her milk before her solids anyway so don't know.
I know lately she has been a bit tired and has been crying on the boob so I just take her off, obviously she isn't hungry, just tired.
The only time she really sucks good is at her morning feed at 6.00 or 7.00 pm and she is ravenous. She sleeps from 7.00 pm to 6.00/7.00 am.
Hope your feeding is going OK. I have thought about trying her on a bottle but breast feeding is so much better for me and easier! I don't want to give up but I know it can get very frustrating. Keep up the good work and let us know how its going. :)
