My 4 month old has been coughing for the last three days.

His cough is not of the nasty, 'juicy' variety, just a dry, irritated cough. It has been waking his up from his sleep, and generally making him grumpy (as any of us would be, with interrupted sleep, and a constant cough).

I took him to the doctor thismorning, only she told me that his temperature was fine, his chest was clear, and that he seemed generally ok (which he does).

Problem is, that the only thing that seems to help him relax is panadol, and I am reluctant to just keep giving it to him.

Does anyone know anything I can give him to relieve this kind of cough ? We have tried steam tonight, and that provided temporary relief (but not enough).

Any suggestions are welcome !!

Thanks in advance !

HI BB,

My 4 month old recently had a cough for 4 weeks straight. It drove me nuts, as he was waking himself up 5 or 6 times a night coughing (as well as us). I tried two different childrens cough mixtures to no avail.

I ended up buying a steam venilator, which worked a treat. I only had to use it for 4 nights before it dramatically improved his cough and he stopped waking up during the night. It was $32 well spent and I'm sure I will have to use it again in the future. Perhaps you may want to try this as an alternative to medicine?

His GP said that this years flu's and coughs are particularly virulent strains and are hanging around for months before babies are getting any relief, and we just have to let them run their natural course.

Good luck with it.

Yes we bought a steam vaporiser as well. It was fantastic!!! I also used the baby Vicks on his chest as well. But I would recommened a steam vaporiser or even a heater to take the chilll off the air.
