Depends on the lens that comes with it and any accessories, you could have a search on ebay to compare prices. Probably looking at $700-$800 and upwards.

Well Harvey Norman is doing specials on cameras at the moment (well in NSW and it was last weekend but I assume they still are). We brought a Nikon D3000 for $650 (and that was before the $50 cashback that Nikon was doing) last weekend. So depending on what price they are asking for it you might be better off buying a new one and at least that way you get a warranty on it.

I got my brand new canon eos 500D with one lens on eBay for $900. But I got it from Japan and it's called a Kiss X3 instead and I had to go through the manual and find out how to change the language settings haha.
But yeah, check eBay. The only drawback is their lack of warranty. Mine came with a 3 month warranty, if it was faulty I could send it back. But no official canon warranty.
But mine works fine, no issues at all and I've dropped it a hundred and one times. Once I dropped it in water. I swear it's indestructible.

I would get one with warranty, its worth it. I paid $1500 for my Canon and have used warranty once already (and about to again, starting to think its a poo camera ) Good Luck :)

ETA: I got a tripod, bag, 4gig card, 3yrs extra warranty (soooo worth it)

not sure on second hand but

I just paid $1395 for the 500d with twin lense (was $1595 they gave me a deal)
so all up I paid $1600 including an extra 2yr warranty (total of 3yrs) , bag, 8 gig memory card and a UV filter
so I basically got all the extras for fee:)

Not saying anything bad against Canon of course, its a fantastic camera. First the sensor dropped so i had a horizontal line at the top of my photos. This time my 18mm-55mm Lens isnt focusing, so am sending it away on Tuesday. I must say though Canon are fantastic at their customer service (repairs) i sent it away and it was back fixed within 3wks.

Canon are notorious for their dud auto focus even on their 5D MII camera's which are pro level. I've heard so many pros whinge about the af and that the only way to combat it is with top quality lenses. I am going to change to nikon eventually and because of availability to rent things it was between the two and that's why I am wary of canon.

Interesting you say that MN - I have heard many people say the same thing about the Canon lenses - the kit lenses in particular. I asked the dude at the camera shop and he seemed to assure me that they are of much better quality these days... Might have to look into that a bit more... Thanks.

Indigo - Its good to know that there customer service is good. I hope you don't have any more trouble!!

Hiya, I have a Sony A380 and I love it. It was $1300 with a twin lense kit and extra waranty. I know Nikon and Canon are 'the best' but I really havent had any problems with my Sony and imo they are just as good as the others and have a great range of lenses too.

I use sony and tbh I wish I'd bought something else. It's very user friendly and has some good features like image stabilisation in the body rather than lens but it does have some downfalls with it's entry level which is what I use. I think the real deal breaker for me was the fact that you can't find as much sony stuff around as you can for nikon and cannon. I would love to rent some lens but they only really rent out nikon and canon. Also sony's gear is pretty expensive in comparison.

I would say if you could get a d90 for a god price new or second hand go for it cos that's a pretty good entry level camera.

Seeings as the Sony camera is based on a Minolta Konica SLR you can use any AF Minolta lenses on your Sony Alpha.....

Heres a link to a site explaining it better....
