View Full Version : Blood in breastmilk
Does anyone know if blood in breastmilk is harmful to bubs? Has anyone had experience with this? I have no idea how much blood my baby may (or may not) be getting during feeds as I think the bleeding happens mid-feed - I dont always see blood but he has been having black nappies which tested positive for blood.
We have had lots of tests and can't find any source of bleeding in the baby - that's why I think it must be coming from me.
Thanks for your help.
I panicked the first time I found blood in my expressed milk when I went back to work and rang the ABA who said that the milk is fine and that babies are often drinking our blood. They called it "rusty pipes" syndrome and said that with the blood vessels so close to the milk ducts the membranes between are incredibly fragile and sometimes break, so blood goes into the milk. She said that it won't hurt the baby and not to worry. I didn't have to tip out the expressed pink milk and my daughter drank it with no dramas the next day.
Hi
There's nothing like the shock you get when you look down and find your expressed breastmilk is pink with blood from you (well maybe black baby nappies are right up there too :o ). But seriously, there is no harm to your baby from any blood in your milk - it doesn't bother them at all.
Cheers
