Hi everyone
I just have a quick question. I am booked into NWP for Feb and have a big thing about wanting my own room. I'm really uncomfortable with the idea of sharing my personal space after the birth. I'd be interested in hearing how many of you who went to NWP had to share, and for how long. I assume they spread everyone out and only double up once they are full (I hope so anyway!). Are the rooms big enough to share without being in each others personal space?
God I really dread the idea of sharing. I figured by going private the one thing I was guaranteed of was getting my own room! For those that manged to get one of the queen bed rooms- HOW DID YOU MANGE THAT??!! What do you think my chances are of getting my own room in early Feb? Surely it's not a really busy month :fingerscrossed:
Thanks :D

Hi V&M,
When I had DD last Dec at NWP, I got my own room straight away. I was booked in for a medically req'd C/s first thing on a Monday morning so that may have had something to do with it.
I know the midwife did say that Monday's always seem less busy and that she reckoned that you have more chance of your own room on a Monday????
Having said the above, by Friday when I left, the ward was soooo busy as c/s mum's had booked in that week so there bubs weren't born too close to Christmas, so I left my room earlier so someone else could move in (ended up waiting for hubby to pick me up in the lounge for hrs!!)
Also, on my booking in form, I asked for my own room as I suffer from IBS and didn't want to share a bathroom for the comfort of myself and other people.....TMI??
I do know that even if you start out in a shared room, ask to be moved if a private one becomes available.
A few people I know have got a queen size bed room (one because her mum used to be the head midwife at NWP, the other was just lucky).
:fingerscrossed: you get a private room!!!!

The first night after my caesar I was in a share room with another patient. We both got moved to single rooms first thing the next morning. She kept asking about it, but I didn't ask at all and I got moved first. Not sure if that had anything to do with it or not.

I had DS on a Thursday - the NW was fully packed and maternity patients were even transferred to the general admissions section. I managed to get my own room on the Saturday, and one of the double rooms on the Sunday. DH did ask for our own room due to the traffic from people coming and going (at all hours!!) - the shared rooms can get a little cramped and noisy esp when you're trying to sleep or put bub to sleep.
I hear they're changing all the rooms to one bed (double or queen) only, fingers crossed it happens before you arrive :) .

I don't know if they will do that before Feb 07?? I heard they are actually expanding the hospital and building a bigger Mat ward, specialist rooms and a bigger carpark.

Have heard the same thing. It will apparently be gradual but will end up with a separte maternity wing.
All the peeps I know that have had bubs there started with double rooms and kept them while they were their.

I visited a friend there this afternoon and her new bubba:hugs: and she had her own large room with a double bed. She had one last time she had a bub there too.

Hi,
I have had two babies at NWP. Both times I had a queen room all to myself. The first time I spent about 2 hours in a shared room before they moved me to my own room. It was actually an advantage as the girl in the room with me was really helpful and gave me some great tips. When I had the second baby in Nov there were several empty rooms and I was given so much attention. As far as I know, they usually give the queen beds to the VB patients and the single beds to the C-sections as these beds raise up/down so they are more comfortable after surgery. I understand how you feel, I wouldn't like to have shared for more than a day.
Good luck

Hi!
I recently gave birth at NWP in June - was booked in for c/s. I was told a week prior to surgery (pre-admissions) I'd be lucky to get my own room at first. Then when I checked in on the Thursday I was told "you're lucky to have your own room". So I had my own room for the 5 days, single adjustable bed.
When SIL came to visit she said there were empty beds everywhere (that was on the Saturday) and I explained to her that what I was told at pre-admissions.
FACT: Was told at parenting classes that NWP are expanding and every room will be single rooms only. No more double beds - apparently it interferes with MW duties during the night.
Hope it all goes well for you - who is your Ob? - You can PM me if you don't want that to be known.
Take care and have a healthy pregnancy! :fingerscrossed:

Hey i had my son at the nwph in may this year. I had a premature labour and was in hospital with cotractions for 4 days before my son came. the 1st 24 hours i spent in the labour room. the next 3 nights i was in a room with 2 beds( a share room) but no one was in it untill the after my son was born on the 4th day. The rooms have plenty of room to sleep in and have people in with you. However after the tiring4 days of labour and my son put in the special care nursary my husband and i had a sleep on our bed which we both fit, and the nurse came in and said that she woud get us a different room. We got a queen sized bed and my husband stayed over every night. i was in hospital a bit over a week and half. i think that you ohnly have to stay in a share room if the hospital is realy full but i beieve that you will everntually get your own room. By the way the nwph made by traumatic birth the best experience in my life they were so good to me and supportive of me. you have choosen a good hospital.

Thank you so much everyone! I'm so happy to hear this! I was absolutely terrified that I'd have to share so I'm much happier and less stressed now!
Our obs is Dr Sheahan, so far he's been fantastic
Thanks so much again, you've really made my day :smiliedance:

I had my first at NW and ended up having an unplanned csec. I asked for a private room but was in a shared room for the first couple of days, after that they moved me into one of the rooms with a double bed at my request although my OB was reluctant for this as he thought I would not be able to get up and down ok.
I am glad I got the double bed it was a darn site more comfortable than the normal hospital beds.
I had my other children elsewhere due to want to avoiding another csec so can only go on what the other ladies have said about what things are like recently, although I have heard from another lady the same thing that was said above in relation to women being overflowed into the other wards.

Hi,
I am going to Dr Sheahan too!!! Just letting you know in case you don't already but NWP do open days every 2nd and 4th Saturday between 11-1. DH and I went and had a look about a month ago and were both very impressed. The labour rooms look awesome - big rooms with the spa bath and shower (with 2 nozzles), birthing ball, tv, dvd player and a cd player!! We were also told by the MW that if you have a C/S you get the single beds as they go up/down (but you can eventually be moved into a queen room) and it is a first come first serve basis in regards to the queen rooms. Hope this helps!
Cheers

Thanks Shazza! I knew about the open days but haven't ventured to one yet! Now that I have an obvious bump I might go! I wanted to go early on but thought I would look weird checking the place out without a belly! How have you been finding Dr Sheahan? I think he's
