Hiya, I am a student Doula who has a VBAC client due to give birth at the end of September and was considering the Wesley. She was told that the Wesley has a no doula policy which I confirmed with a phone call myself. As I was informed by the manager in the maternity unit, you can bring along a support person to your birth at the Wesley if she is "a friend", but just don't tell them she is a Doula or they will ignore her, not speak to her directly and possibly ask her to leave if they feel necessary!

Needless to say my client is considering another hospital as she feels this is her human right to take whomever she chooses to her birth! I must say as a Doula, woman and consumer I found this very disappointing that women are unable to have the support they need in a hospital they are paying very good money to birth in. I would also be very interested to hear of anyone who has birthed at the wesley with a Doula present, and from any Doula's who have supported births at the Wesley to see how this policy is implemented.

I had a client that was having her baby at the wesley and her OB was very happy to have me (a Dolua) present at her birth.
So maybe different OBs can decided if its ok!

We didnt end up going to the wesley as she moved down the coast and birthed at a private hospital down there.

I have supported about 18 at a guess woman to birth at the Wesley but don't choose to support there now. Happy to have anybody P.M. me to keep the conversation more private. I have heard lately that they have a no doula policy set up quite recently and I believe this should send up alarm bells to birthing woman. The mids are mostly really nice actually , I have supported a mid that works at the Wesley but interestingly she chose not to birth there herself for obvious reasons. The mids will tell you themselves they have a 80 % c/s rate. So they get a buzz when they see a natural birth, and my clients have had only 2 c/s there and we have even achieved birthing on the floor most times.

I am surprised to see the negative news about no doulas and birthing at the Wesley

I VBAC'ed there in Sept 09 and although I did not have a doula I did however have a no intervention successful VBAC. I didn't require any monitoring, no canula, no restricted to the bed. I was free to birth how I wanted and with amazing support from 2 older Middies.

Had an awesome birth there. But may have had a lot to do with my OB who I have a looooong association with (first birth and IVF) so I was very confident with him and he knew my wishes.

Angain, as I said sad to hear about the non support :(
